Changing the hub caps without dismantling the rims?

Is it possible to change the hub caps (rim caps) without having to remove the rims/wheels? This is certainly a question that doesn't necessarily come up very often. However, it is not entirely unjustified. For example, if you are a BMW driver, and possibly the existing hub caps of the wheels against the fixed variant want to switch from BMW accessories. And this tuning option does not only exist with the brand BMW, but also at the BMW subsidiary Rolls-Royce and also Volkswagen has the option in the range. Various third-party providers also have corresponding, universal accessories available for other vehicle manufacturers. But what if you want to block the hub caps? Do you really have to remove the wheel, remove the cover from behind through the rim and do that four times? Nein! There is a trick (see video below).

Hard to believe, but if you just do it with a small suction cup tried, then the lid can be pulled out without any problems in most cases. At least when the lid's surface is smooth. And you might already have such a suction cup in your vehicle. Roughly in the form of a Bike Phone Mount or a holder from the mobile navigation device. Also, the suction cup can be used by a household tool such as a cleaning brush function. It may even be possible with an old children's toothbrush. These also often have a small suction cup at the end so that you can “set them up” on the sink.

Duct tape can work too!

Alternatively, you can do it with Tape to attempt. Either double-sided tape or folded tape Panzertape. Our short video shows you exactly how this works. And one last option is hot glue from a Hot glue gun. Simply stick a screw with the screw head onto the hub cap, let it cool down and pull the cap out with a jerk. Once the adhesive has cooled down completely, it can usually be removed from the hub cap completely without leaving any residue. In any case, these methods are worth a first try before you start the cumbersome disassembly from the bike. Waive by the way, you should look for sharp objects and try to pry out the hub cap somehow. This only leaves unsightly scratches on the rim and also scratches the old hub caps. Not to mention the risk of injury.

The following note is essential: For safety reasons, tuningblog recommends all repair, inspection and maintenance work exclusively to be carried out in a specialist workshop!
