2020 BMW M5 and M5 Competition Facelift! (F90 LCI)

The new BMW M5 (combined fuel consumption: 10,6 - 10,5 l / 100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 242 - 239 g / km *) and the new BMW M5 Competition (combined fuel consumption: 10,6 - 10,5 l / 100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 242 - 239 g / km *) combine with optical refinement, a refined operating concept and the central display enlarged to 12,3 inches better than ever the everyday sovereignty of a business sedan with the dynamism and maximum Performance of a high-performance sports car. In the BMW M5 Competition, new shock absorbers from the BMW M8 Gran Coupé and a retuning of the chassis raise the handling and driving behavior in the limit area to an even higher level and at the same time increase the comfort experience. The 4,4 liter V8 engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology delivers 5 kW / 441 hp in the BMW M600, while the high-speed engine in the BMW M5 Competition develops 460 kW / 625 hp.

Fine-tuning for a sharpened appearance.

As in the BMW 5 Series, the further developed BMW kidney extends further down into the front apron, the chrome frame is held in one piece and encloses both kidney parts together. M specific are the double ribs and an M badge. The front apron is more strikingly shaped and has larger side air intakes, the large central air intake is hexagonal and integrates the oil cooler and the radar sensor for active cruise control (ACC). The redesigned LED headlights are dynamically supplemented by the new L-shaped light tubes that narrow towards the kidney. The new optional BMW Individual Headlight Shadow Line gives the adaptive LED headlights and BMW laser light an additional dark accent. Like the double ribs of the BMW kidney grille, the aluminum bonnet, the front side walls with the characteristic M gills, the aerodynamically optimized M exterior mirrors and the roof made of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) are characteristic design features of the performance versions of the BMW 5 Series. Thanks to thinner side walls, the M-specific double tailpipes now look more technical and precise. The powerful rear apron with large diffuser and the three-dimensional LED rear lights, whose precise light graphics reinterpreted the typical BMW L-shape, were also redesigned.

Black details in the competition and new colors.

The exposed position of the BMW M5 Competition also underlines numerous black details. The frame of the BMW kidney grille, the grille on the M gills, the exterior mirror caps and an additional rear spoiler on the boot lid are finished in high-gloss black. The rear apron has black inserts. There are black M5 competition badges on the BMW kidney grille, on the gills and on the tailgate and illuminated on the door sills. The tailpipes of the standard M sports exhaust system are in black chrome. The color palette of the BMW M5 and BMW M5 Competition offers five new paint finishes: Brands Hatch Gray and Motegi Red metallic as well as the BMW Individual paintwork Tanzanite Blue II metallic, Aventurine Red II metallic and the matt Frozen Bluestone metallic. The previous color Champagne Quartz metallic is now available as Alvit gray metallic. The 8-inch M double-spoke wheel in Orbit Gray with a high-sheen finish, which is familiar from the BMW M20, is added to the alloy wheels as an optional extra.

With the introduction of a new operating concept and the enlargement of the central display to a diagonal of 12,3 inches, the new BMW M5 and BMW M5 Competition put the driver even more in focus. This makes it even easier to get an overview of the diverse functions of the vehicle dynamics systems and the BMW M xDrive all-wheel drive. With two new buttons in the center console, familiar from the BMW M8, he can directly access the settings and the displays in the instrument cluster and in the head-up display. The driver quickly switches between the ROAD and SPORT settings by simply pressing the M Mode button. In the basic setting ROAD, all standard and optional driver assistance systems are fully activated. In the SPORT setting, the driver assistance systems that are active in accordance with the driver's individual configuration only transmit warnings, for example, about speed limits and no overtaking. With the exception of the collision warning with braking function and the avoidance aid, all interventions in the deceleration and steering systems can be overridden in this mode. In SPORT mode, a specific M View view also appears in the instrument cluster and in the head-up display.

With the setup key directly into the configuration menu.

Have the vehicle matched to the respective driving situation and personal preferences. Thanks to simpler operation using the touch display or the iDrive controller, the driver can select various settings for the engine, chassis, steering and the M xDrive all-wheel drive system. The two red buttons M1 and M2 next to the shift paddles on the M multifunction steering wheel also enable quick changes to the vehicle setup. They allow you to freely configure two individual setups, which in addition to M xDrive and DSC also include engine, transmission, damper and steering characteristics as well as the M View in the head-up display.

Puristic M feeling in the TRACK mode of the BMW M5 Competition.

With the BMW M5 Competition, a long press on the M Mode button and a subsequent confirmation on the central display activates the additional setting TRACK. The mode, designed exclusively for use on the racetrack, deactivates all comfort and safety functions of the driver assistance systems. In order to draw the driver's attention even more to the road, the audio system is also muted and the central display is switched off. So the driver can experience an extremely puristic form of the M feeling. The instrument cluster switches to the M View, the head-up display does not display the driver assistance systems. The automatic triggering of the hazard warning flashers after emergency braking and the rear-end warning system are switched off; pressing the M Mode button again ends the TRACK setting and reactivates the ROAD mode.

M sport seats as standard, M multifunction seats as an option.

Instead of the standard and multiple electrically adjustable M sports seats with Merino leather, the M multifunctional seats with integrated headrest, illuminated M5 logo and extended functions are available as options. The full leather interior Merino Black / Midrand Beige is now also available exclusively for the BMW M5 Competition.

Extensive selection of driver assistance systems.

All driver assistance systems and features of the BMW 5 Series are available for the performance models. The Driving Assistant Professional, the traffic jam assistant and, for selected markets, the engine start via remote control are available as options. With the optional extra comfort access, the BMW Digital Key offers the option of unlocking and locking the vehicle using selected smartphones via Near Field Communication (NFC).

The high-speed concept of the V8 engine, which is derived from racing, ensures impressive thrust in the BMW M5 and BMW M5 Competition and impresses with its superior power delivery. In the BMW M5, the peak output of 441 kW / 600 hp is achieved at 6.000 rpm, the 1 kW / 460 hp of the BMW M625 Competition are also at 5 rpm. In both models, the maximum torque of 6.000 Nm is available from 1 rpm and remains at this very high level up to 750 rpm with the BMW M1.800 and even up to 1 rpm with the BMW M5.600 Competition. The engine characteristics can be changed from the basic setting EFFICIENT to SPORT and SPORT + at the push of a button and then ensures an even faster response to accelerator pedal commands. The BMW M1 completes the standard sprint from 5 to 5.860 km / h in just 1 seconds, which is on par with super sports cars. After 5 seconds, 0 km / h are already reached. The BMW M100 Competition does both of these tasks an eyelash faster: 5 km / h after 3,4 seconds, 11,1 km / h after 200 seconds. The top speed of the BMW M5 and BMW M100 Competition is 3,3 km / h, with the optional M Driver's Package 200 km / h are possible. The flap-controlled double-flow exhaust system on the BMW M10,8 and the likewise double-flow and flap-controlled M sports exhaust system on the BMW M5 Competition provide the appropriate acoustic background. Decent drive sounds can also be called up using the M Sound Control button. The standard 5-speed M Steptronic transmission enables exceptionally short shift times as well as quick and precise reactions to any load requirement. With the Drivelogic rocker switch on the gear selector switch, three modes can be selected for efficient, sporty or particularly dynamic driving on the race track with extremely short shift times. Manual intervention is also possible with the selector lever and the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Specific engine mounts for the BMW M5 Competition.

A special feature of the BMW M5 Competition is its specific engine mounting with a higher spring rate characteristic. The tighter connection of the drive unit to the vehicle structure is clearly noticeable, leads to an even more spontaneous response behavior of the engine and an immediate transfer of its power to the drive train. In addition, the stiffer characteristic curve leads to a noticeably more direct and precise turning into corners.

Everyday high-performance athletes.

With its central, intelligent control of the Active M Differential, the M xDrive provides the basis for the impressive dynamic, dynamic balancing act between everyday practicality and driving pleasure, as well as maximum performance on the racetrack. From the variable all-wheel drive mode (4WD) with rear-wheel-oriented basic alignment, the driver can influence the driving behavior in various levels up to pure rear-wheel drive without Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) in 2WD mode, which allows the expert to have absolutely puristic driving fun. The M Servotronic steering in the COMFORT and SPORT modes as well as the variable damper control (VDC) with the COMFORT modes for perfect suitability for everyday use, SPORT for sporty driving on country roads and ideal handling on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife and SPORT + for maximum Driving dynamics on flat asphalt with minimized wheel and body movements. In addition to lowering the vehicle by 5 millimeters and further targeted modifications to the wheel suspension and suspension, the BMW M7 Competition also has a set-up that has been adapted to its extra power and refined, which is particularly effective on the racetrack. New shock absorbers from the BMW M8 Gran Coupé not only improve handling in the limit area, but also the comfort experience. Road waves, in particular, are passed on to the body and thus the passengers much less without impairing sportiness and precision across all speed ranges.
