Affalterbach. Mercedes-AMG continues to consistently strengthen its brand identity: the new E 53 4MATIC + Coupé and the Cabriolet have now also been given the characteristic AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical fins. Their A-shaped design and the flatter, full-LED headlights create a wide, powerful impression. The newly formed front apron in the A-wing design also has a positive influence on the overall vehicle proportions. The interior has been thoroughly upgraded and shows even more AMG family membership. Large displays, the new AMG Performance steering wheel and the MBUX infotainment system with AMG-specific functions and displays create the typical Performance Luxury ambience.

435 HP and maximum 520 NM torque

The electrified 3,0-liter engine with double charging by means of an exhaust gas turbocharger and an additional electric compressor delivers 320 kW (435 hp) and provides a maximum torque of 520 Nm. Its EQ Boost starter generator briefly provides additional 16 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque and also feeds the 48-volt electrical system. Other highlights of the new models include the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and the fully variable all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4MATIC +. "After the sedan and estate, our new E 53 4MATIC + models also offer a perfect synthesis of performance, elegance and comfort as a coupé and cabriolet. With specific measures on the exterior and interior, we have sharpened the brand identity again somewhat and are gradually pushing ahead with the revision of our entire E-Class family. The two-door models from Affalterbach are the perfect offer for lifestyle-oriented customer groups that demand performance and efficiency", Says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Completely redesigned, striking front, round double tailpipe trims and new colors

The design of the front view is completely new and reinforces the AMG family membership. The most important feature is the AMG-specific radiator grille with twelve vertical slats, which the E 53 4MATIC + Coupé and Cabriolet have now also received. The A-shaped basic design of the front, which widens towards the bottom, and the flatter, sharper-cut full LED headlights create a particularly powerful impression. The power domes on the bonnet also contribute to this. The front apron is pulled up in the middle part in an A-shape, creating another, large air inlet with five vertical struts. Through it, technical details such as the cooler can be seen, which supports the sporty, authentic impression. This also applies to the large outer air inlets with two cross blades and the new front splitter. With their high-quality materials, the flics in high-gloss black not only confirm the brand's performance luxury character, but also improve aerodynamics in combination with the internal air curtains. All measures together create an extremely dynamic, forward-looking overall picture. The similarity to the AMG GT sports car family is obvious.

The most important distinguishing feature at the rear are the round double tailpipe trims, which are available in silver chrome or high-gloss black (as part of the optional AMG Night package). They are harmoniously integrated in the rear apron. The design of the apron sides improves the aerodynamics at the rear: As a result, the wheel arches are better flowed around. The tear-off edge on the trunk lid is painted in the vehicle color, but optionally also available in carbon.

The new 19-inch alloy wheels in aerodynamically optimized 5-twin-spoke design stand out from the side. Optionally, 20-inch alloy wheels in 5-twin-spoke design are available, also aerodynamically optimized and designed with a wider rim, optionally painted in matt black or in high-gloss titanium gray. The new paint colors available are graphite gray metallic and the matt brilliant blue magno, which was previously reserved for the AMG GT family.

The optional AMG Night Package makes the E 53 4MATIC + Coupé and Cabriolet even more sporty. Exterior mirror housings, window frames and trim parts in the front and rear aprons are designed in high-gloss black. There are also tailpipe trims in black chrome. The Carbon Package II sets individual accents with mirror caps and tear-off edge on the trunk lid in carbon.

Interior with independent equipment and specific displays

The interior welcomes passengers with its own equipment, luxurious materials and the latest generation of MBUX infotainment systems. The seats in ARTICO man-made leather / black DINAMICA microfibre with AMG-specific graphics, red contrasting topstitching and AMG badge are characteristic of the 53 models and combine sportiness with strong lateral support and long-distance comfort. Other interior features include red seat belts and trim elements in carbon. Additional upholstery in nappa leather is optionally available. New is leather nappa black / titanium gray pearl with red contrasting topstitching.

Visually, the two displays for instrument cluster and multimedia displays merge under a common cover glass to form the widescreen cockpit. With the instrument cluster, the customer can switch between the three AMG display styles "Modern Classic", "Sport" and "Supersport". The "Supersport" mode with a central, round tachometer and bar-shaped, perspective information, which is located to the left and right of the tachometer and creates a spatial impression of depth, is particularly striking. The driver can use the AMG menu to call up various special displays such as engine data, gear display, warm-up, set-up, G-meter and race timer. The touchscreen multimedia display also emphasizes the dynamic alignment with individual AMG displays such as the visualization of the driving programs or telemetry data.

New AMG performance steering wheel with seamlessly integrated buttons

With a fresh design and seamlessly integrated buttons, the new AMG Performance steering wheel creates an even closer relationship between man and machine. The three rounded double spokes combine stability with lightness, and the steering wheel rim, which is flattened at the bottom, is a typical motorsport element. The cover is available in leather, in microfiber DINAMICA or as a combination of leather and microfiber, with steering wheel heating on request. In addition, the steering wheel rim contains a sensor mat for recognizing “hands-on”. If the driver does not keep his hands on the steering wheel for a certain period of time, a warning cascade is started which, if the driver continues to be inactive, activates the emergency stop assistant.

The new switches, which are integrated in the surfaces of the horizontal double spokes, are very elegant. Haptic feelers in the area of the symbols make operation easier. The instrument cluster is operated via the left sensor surface of the upper steering wheel spokes and the media display via the right sensor surface. The lower spokes contain the controls for cruise control / DISTRONIC (left) and telephone / handsfree / volume control (right). The optional AMG steering wheel buttons for controlling the driving programs and other, individually definable functions have received even more brilliant displays with new icons and are now both round.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission can be shifted manually using the galvanized shift paddles arranged on the left and right behind the steering wheel rim. For even more precise switching commands, the paddles have become slightly larger and positioned lower.

In-line six-cylinder with EQ Boost starter generator and additional electrical compressor

The 3,0-liter in-line six-cylinder is characterized by top performance and intelligent electrification. The EQ Boost starter generator combines a starter and alternator in a powerful electric motor and is installed between the engine and the transmission. It is a central component of the 48-volt on-board network and is not only used as an electrical generator, but also takes on hybrid functions. These include boosting with 16 kW of power and 250 Newton meters of torque, recuperation, shifting the load point, sailing and the almost imperceptible restart of the engine with the start-stop function.

This innovation as well as the intelligent charging with an additional electric compressor (eZV) and an exhaust gas turbocharger pursue the same goal: to increase the typical AMG performance and driving dynamics, but at the same time to reduce consumption and emissions. Supported by the EQ Boost starter generator when starting, the additional electric compressor builds up high boost pressure without delay, which means that the torque for acceleration accelerates faster until the large exhaust gas turbocharger starts. The 3,0 liter engine reacts extremely spontaneously and offers a highly dynamic response without turbo lag.

The electronically limited top speed of 250 km / h can be increased to 270 km / h with the AMG Driver's Package. The AMG brake system is optimally matched to the power and performance of the E 53 models: perforated and internally ventilated discs in the size 370 x 36 mm with four-piston fixed callipers and AMG lettering are used on the front axle, and ventilated discs of the size on the rear axle 360 x 26 mm with single-piston floating calipers.

Short shift times, high efficiency: AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission

The 3,0-liter in-line engine is coupled with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission, which impresses with extremely short shift times, quick reactions to shift paddle commands, the double-declutching function and multiple downshifts. An upshift or downshift is implemented immediately. Especially in the “Sport +” driving program and in manual mode, the transmission operates very spontaneously. Dynamic acceleration maneuvers and the shortest shift times can be called up, as can a fuel-saving driving style, depending on the selected driving program.

Characteristics at your fingertips: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT

With the five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs "Smoothness", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport +" and "Individual", the characteristics of the new 53 series can be influenced at the touch of a finger. The differentiation ranges from efficient and comfortable to very sporty. Important parameters such as the response behavior of the engine, transmission, chassis and steering are modified. Regardless of the DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs, the driver can switch directly to manual mode using the "M" button in order to only switch using the steering wheel shift paddles. Likewise, the chassis levels can also be selected if necessary.

“Moppt”: Mercedes lifts AMG E53 4Matic + Coupé & Cabrio

The AMG DYNAMICS driving dynamics control is integrated into the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs. In the "Basic", "Advanced" and "Pro" levels, for example, it influences the control strategies of the ESP® (Electronic stability program) or all-wheel drive. Based on the driver's actions and sensor data, the intelligent pilot control anticipates the desired vehicle behavior. The range extends from extremely stable to highly dynamic, for a more comfort-oriented or particularly sporty driving experience. The AMG DYNAMICS functions can also be selected directly using the AMG steering wheel buttons. Both the modifiable vehicle characteristics and the extensive equipment options allow a wide spread between sportiness, elegance and lifestyle, whereby the coupé and convertible meet every individual customer requirement.

Independent AMG RIDE CONTROL + suspension for more driving dynamics

“Moppt”: Mercedes lifts AMG E53 4Matic + Coupé & Cabrio

The AMG RIDE CONTROL + air suspension developed in Affalterbach is used for more agility, more neutral cornering and greater traction. The multi-chamber air suspension with a particularly sporty spring-damper setup and the continuous adjustment damping ADS + (Adaptive Damping System) combines excellent driving dynamics with high rolling comfort. Hardening of the spring rate, for example in curves or when braking, effectively reduces roll movements.

The damping adapts to the current driving situation and the road conditions on each wheel. In addition, the damper characteristic can be preselected in the three levels "Comfort," Sport "and" Sport + "and thus enables a noticeable differentiation between high long-distance comfort and sporty driving dynamics.

Fully variable all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4MATIC + as standard

The fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC + all-wheel drive combines optimal traction for dynamic driving pleasure with high driving safety under all conditions: on dry roads as well as in wet conditions or on slippery surfaces. The transition from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive and vice versa takes place continuously because the intelligent control is integrated into the entire vehicle system architecture.

Available for the first time for the six-cylinder models: the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package

For an even more emotional driving experience, the optional AMG DYNAMIK PLUS package bundles technical and optical equipment details that were previously reserved for the eight-cylinder models. The highlights include the RACE driving program with drift mode. The AMG Performance steering wheel in DINAMICA microfiber then has the steering wheel buttons for quick operation of the driving programs and other driving dynamics settings. Red painted brake calipers with AMG lettering on the front and rear axles visually underline the sporty character.
