Porsche 911 GT3 (992): from racing car to production model!

State-of-the-art racing technology for the road: In the new Porsche 911 GT3, the brand's most powerful genes combine to create something even stronger. An expert analysis of the motorsport legends Walter Röhrl and Jörg Bergmeister. A 20 year old thriller is playing in Walter Röhrl's head cinema. “We would never have thought that a production car on the Nordschleife could drive under eight minutes,” recalls the motorsport legend. The very first Porsche 911 GT3 could do that. Of course, also because it was chased over the Nürburgring by the two-time rally world champion. At 7: 56,33 minutes, the clock stopped after 1999 kilometers in 20,6. A sensation! For Jörg Bergmeister, then 23 years old and prospective Porsche works driver, it was clear: the GT3 is his dream car.

Experts: Walter Röhrl and Jörg Bergmeister share the enthusiasm for the Porsche 911 GT3.

Now Porsche has presented the seventh edition of the high-performance sports car. Bergmeister and Lars Kern catapulted their way through the Green Hell during the final coordination work. Development driver Kern set the absolute record of four almost equally fast laps on the current 20,8 kilometer test track in exactly 6: 59,927 minutes (911 GT3 (WLTP): combined fuel consumption 13,0 - 12,9 l / 100 km, CO2- Combined emissions 294 - 293 g / km, 911 GT3 (NEDC): combined fuel consumption 13,3 - 12,4 l / 100 km, CO2-Emissions combined 304 - 283 g / km). Around a minute faster than the first time. “One world,” says Röhrl.

Brilliant driving machine: The 375 kW (510 PS) four-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine of the Porsche 911 GT3 comes from racing, just like the sophisticated aerodynamics and chassis technology.

The latest GT3 contains more racing technology than any of its predecessors. The layout of the double wishbone front axle, the sophisticated aerodynamics with the gooseneck rear wing, the distinctive diffuser, to name just a few. Bergmeister, now 45, knows the components well: from the Porsche 911 RSR, the GT works racing car that delivered Porsche Le Mans victories and world championship titles.

Stimulating sound sensation

More contact pressure: Both the front diffuser and the imposing gooseneck rear wing can be adjusted manually for excursions on round trips.

Everything is wonderful, everything is high-tech, but the absolute sensation has always been and still is this absolute sound. "Stimulating," says Röhrl appreciatively, "no car enthusiast can escape that." Bergmeister nods. He takes care of the new generation of enthusiasts: "My three-year-old son always likes it when the sports exhaust system is open." The orchestral naturally aspirated engine mobilizes 375 kW (510 hp). The four-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine is based on the racing engine of the 911 GT3 R and is also used practically unchanged in the new 911 GT3 Cup. The entire high-performance technology comes from Porsche Motorsport - developed in Flacht, the legendary area at the southern end of the Weissach development center.

The new GT3, with a Porsche double clutch transmission as standard, accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 3,4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 318 km / h. It reaches its maximum output at 8.400 revolutions per minute. "In 20 years, practically all the achievements that were developed for GT racing vehicles have been incorporated into the production car," says Röhrl.

From the GT racing car to the production model

"I've never driven a better production car," enthuses Bergmeister about the youngest spearhead. “You always know exactly what the vehicle is doing.” Röhrl confirms: “Balance is the key to driving fast. And I've been a weight fanatic all my life. ”The 1,96 meter man smiles and pats his flat stomach. "When I hear that the new GT3, which is much bigger, can do a lot more, and weighs no more than 70 kilograms than the first GT3 back then, I can only say: a marvel of technology!"

Porsche 911 GT3 (992): from racing car to production model!Racing bonds are also responsible for the pleasing weight level. For example the front hood made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic, lightweight glass panes, optimized brake discs and forged light alloy wheels. The lightweight sports exhaust system saves no less than ten kilograms. The new GT1.435 weighs 3 kilograms. Those who like it particularly puristic can order a six-speed manual transmission and save a further 17 kilograms. Additional options for weight optimization are components such as the roof made of carbon fiber.

The optical shift assistant with colored bars to the left and right of the rev counter proves to be helpful for circuit use. The bars fill up in yellow and flash blue at the optimum switching speed. The shift light is also racing technology from Flacht. In addition, the new track screen provides performance-relevant information such as tire pressure, oil pressure, temperatures and fill levels. With all these and many more details, the GT3 is unquestionably an athlete for pure pleasure on a circuit excursion. But not only.

The most powerful series 911 with a naturally aspirated engine offers an astonishing level of everyday comfort for a razor-sharp driving machine. The grand master of driving has only one thing to add to this: “I am often asked which XNUMX is my favorite,” says Röhrl. "It's always the newest and the next."
