Porsche Design celebrates its anniversary – 50 years!

Porsche AG congratulates Porsche Design on its 50th birthday. Two exclusive vehicles are the highlights of the anniversary year: the exclusive edition model "Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years of Porsche Design" and, as a historical counterpart, a 911 S 2.4 Targa from Porsche Design's founding year 1972, restored by Porsche Classic. The common element of the two vehicles is the color scheme : It ties in with the legendary “Chronograph I” from 1972 designed by Prof. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche: the color black dominates both inside and out. Alongside this, Porsche Design is presenting the “Chronograph 1 – 1972 Limited Edition”. The Porsche Museum is dedicating its own special exhibition to the anniversary, which will open on January 19.

Edition 50 Years of Porsche Design

"When you think about the function of something, the form sometimes comes naturally" - this is how Prof. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche described what drives the engineers and designers at Porsche Design today. In 1972 he founded together with his brother Hans-Peter Porsche Design. The designer of the Porsche 911 had the vision of a company that would take the principles and spirit of Porsche beyond the confines of the automobile. In the meantime, Porsche Design has long been an internationally renowned premium lifestyle brand, known for functional and durable products with puristic aesthetics.

Exclusive edition model: between design classic and modern

The "Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years of Porsche Design" is limited to 750 units and is reminiscent of the design icons of FA Porsche in numerous equipment details. In addition to the exterior color black, the center sections of the seats covered with Sport-Tex in a classic checked pattern and the red second hand of the Porsche Design Subsecond clock of the standard Sport Chrono Package cite the past.

The special model is based on the 911 Targa 4 GTS and can be ordered now. The anniversary model will be available to European sales partners from April. Buyers can also purchase a special version of the re-edition of the legendary Chronograph I. Some elements such as the limited number or the winding rotor in the form of the rims underline the connection to the 911 Edition 50 Years of Porsche Design.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Porsche Design, Porsche Classic has implemented a unique project over the past two years. A 911 S 2.4 Targa from Porsche Design's founding year of 1972 was created for the anniversary. "The vision was to build a historical counterpart to the new special model 'Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years of Porsche Design'," explains Ulrike Lutz, Head of Porsche Classic. “With the help of the new special request program, we were able to implement the idea of ​​a unique pair of vehicles. The task of the designers and employees in factory restoration was to carefully transfer the specifications of the new car to the classic."

A 911 S 2.4 Targa with the signature of FA Porsche!

The base vehicle, a 911 2.4 T 1972 Targa, was in poor condition and incomplete. Otherwise an unfavorable starting position, this time not important in view of the planned modifications. Because the experts from Porsche Classic completely converted the engine and chassis to the S version. The top model of the time drew 6500 hp at 190 rpm from a displacement of 2.341 cm3 and had mechanical fuel injection.

As a homage to Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the one-off picks up the color scheme of the legendary “Chronograph I” from 1972 that he designed: Black dominates both the exterior and interior. Classic side stripes in satin platinum and with integrated Porsche Design lettering adorn the flanks. As a special highlight, the Targa bracket was also glazed in satin platinum - a new interpretation of the brushed stainless steel of the old model. The Targa lettering is in matt black. As on the special model, there is a “50 Years of Porsche Design” badge with a facsimile signature of Prof. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche on the grille of the engine cover at the rear.

More anniversary products and accessories

For all Porsche and watch fans, Porsche Design is also presenting the “Chronograph 1 – 1972 Limited Edition” with the historic logo and lettering. This re-edition of the original, limited to 500 copies, dispenses with the visual parallels to the special vehicle model and is regularly available from Porsche Design.

Limited capsule collections from the areas of fashion, shoes and sportswear, luggage and accessories as well as special eyewear collections complete the anniversary offer.

Special show in the Porsche Museum

The Porsche Museum is celebrating the 11th birthday of Porsche Design with a special show until July 2022, 50. Part of the exhibition is information on the personality of FA Porsche, his design philosophy and his great creative influence. In addition, exhibits from five decades and many product areas will be shown.

The Chronograph I is symbolic of the birth of Porsche Design. Two versions of the legendary watch will be presented at the center of the special show. In terms of design, the exhibition develops from this center to other exhibits. On display are, for example, the P´8478 aviator glasses, the Monobloc Actuator watch series with fully integrated chronograph pushers, as well as the P´3613 whistle and the P´9521 mobile phone. On the balcony, the Porsche Museum displays, among other things, the 993 Speedster that belonged to FA - as well as the 904, which he himself described as his masterpiece. The special show also presents the 911 S 2.4 Targa from 1972 restored by Porsche Classic and the new edition model “Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years of Porsche Design”.
