BMW specifications for repainting sensor areas!

In the industry they are Repair coatings in the sensor area hotly debated. The DAT report says that one in six vehicles has radar-based driver assistance systems, mostly in the bumpers. However, these systems often pose problems for companies involved in repairs. Denn: bumper can only to a limited extent or not at all repaired because that is where the sensors are located. For example, BMW had stipulated that bumpers with radar sensors should be kept in factory condition: It was therefore not permitted to repaint the component! If there was damage in the sensor area, the entire bumper had to be replaced. But at some point the guidelines changed. For vehicles built after 9/2008, there have been different repair specifications for bumpers with radar sensors, depending on the generation the installed sensors.

The HC2 sensors are installed from models from 9/2008, but only at the rear. Here the bumper may be repainted with clear lacquer. Where it is on the bumper no radar radiation are allowed to be reworked with base coat. The areas of radar penetration are marked in the BMW specifications for repairs for each model series. But there are other important requirements: If the paintwork has been damaged, the bumper must be replaced be completely renewed. It is not allowed to work with filler and primer and it is also not possible to blend in in the transmission area. The clear coat must be sanded with 1000 grit or even finer, but not sanded through. The entire irradiated area must then be coated with clear lacquer.

These sensors were installed from year of construction 7/2015. They are installed at the front and rear. There are certain colors that are approved for repainting. These colors are in the workshop manual. If the color is not listed there, then the bumper must be completely replaced. According to the manufacturer, the standard paint is allowed up to three times be repainted. Once the bumper has been primed, the base coat can follow and finally the clear coat. The clear coat may be sanded with 1000 grit sandpaper, but not sanded through. As with the HC2 sensors, it is not permitted in the transmission area Primer, to fillers or to blend in. If the bumper is damaged in the area penetrated by the radar beam, it must be completely replaced. But there is one exception: Stone chips, the damage of which only affects the clear coat layer.

If repair specifications are not observed, functions can fail.

The functions of the sensors can be restricted. This can endanger security. It is therefore important that the workshops act exactly according to the manufacturer's instructions in relation to the model and vehicle type. The KTI raised the issue subsequent coatings and the sensor function a study: "Repair of bumpers taking into account driver assistance systems."
