500 PS: The new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is here!

The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is the new top model of the 718 family - an uncompromising driver's car that scores with lightweight construction, particularly agile chassis set-up, complex aerodynamics and a unique soundscape. If 368 kW (500 PS; 718 Cayman GT4 RS: fuel consumption combined (WLTP) 13.2 l / 100 km, CO₂ emissions * combined (WLTP) 299 g / km, fuel consumption * combined (NEDC) 12.3 l / 100 km, CO₂ emissions * combined (NEDC) 281 g / km) from a high-speed mid-engine to a puristic 1.415 kilogram curb weight, the term driving enjoyment has to be redefined: Whether on narrow serpentine roads in the mountains or closed circuits - the 718 Cayman GT4 RS sets the tone crowned the compact mid-engine series. On the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, it outperforms its little brother, the 718 Cayman GT4, by more than 23 seconds.

Sports car designed for maximum driving pleasure

The heart of the sports car, which is designed for maximum driving pleasure, is the naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine known from the 911 GT3 Cup racing car and the 911 GT3 series model. The engine generates up to 9.000 crankshaft revolutions per minute. Compared to the 718 Cayman GT4, the output increases by 59 kW (80 PS; 718 Cayman GT4: combined fuel consumption (WLTP) 11,1–10,7 l / 100 km, combined CO₂ emissions * (WLTP) 251–242 g / km , Fuel consumption * combined (NEDC) 10,9 - 10,2 l / 100 km, CO₂ emissions * combined (NEDC) 249 - 232 g / km). This results in a power-to-weight ratio of 2,83 kg / hp. The maximum torque climbs from 430 to 450 Newton meters.

A noticeable feature of the new 718 top model are the process air inlets behind the windows for the driver and front passenger. Small side windows are normally built into the 718 Cayman at this point. The new air inlets improve the routing of the intake air and at the same time generate an impressive and emotional intake noise - at the occupants' ears level. The characteristic air inlets in front of the rear wheels have been retained and are used to cool the engine.

Like every modern RS model, the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS is delivered exclusively with a Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK): it changes seven gears at lightning speed and guarantees maximum performance. Thanks to the shift paddles, your hands can stay on the steering wheel even when changing gear manually. Alternatively, the driver of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS can also use the newly designed selector lever on the center console.

The sports PDK with a short gear ratio supports the brilliant sprinting ability of the mid-engine sports car. The 718 Cayman GT4 RS accelerates from zero to 3,4 km / h in just 4 seconds (GT3,9 with PDK: 100 seconds). Propulsion ends at 315 km / h (GT4 with PDK: 302 km / h). The GT4 RS reaches its top speed in seventh gear.

As is typical of the RS, the focus of the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS was on lightweight construction. According to DIN, i.e. with a full tank of fuel and without a driver, the two-seater weighs only 1.415 kilograms. That is 35 kilograms less than the 718 GT4 with PDK. This weight reduction is achieved through the use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), for example on the front hood and the front fenders. Lightweight carpets save weight, as does reducing the amount of insulating material. The rear window is made of lightweight glass. Lightweight door panels with textile opening loops and nets on the storage compartments complete the search for every superfluous gram.

Particularly efficient: the fixed rear wing with gooseneck connection

The new, fixed rear wing with gooseneck connection and wing supports made of aluminum make a striking difference in the exterior design. This particularly efficient wing principle is derived from the GT racing car Porsche 911 RSR and found its way into a Porsche series vehicle for the first time with the 911 GT3. In combination with the body, which has been lowered by 718 millimeters compared to the 30 Cayman, the eye-catching vents in the front wheel arches, the aerodynamically optimized underbody paneling with subsequent rear diffuser, the multi-adjustable front diffuser and the new front lip with flow-around sideblades, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS generates performance -Position reserved for use on racetracks, 25 percent more downforce than the 718 Cayman GT4.

The modifications to the chassis also contribute to the increased performance. Ball joints bind the chassis particularly tightly to the body and ensure even more precise and direct driving behavior. The adjustable chassis, which is fully suitable for racetracks, received RS-specific damper settings as well as modified spring and stabilizer rates.

The optionally available Weissach package gives the GT4 RS an even sportier appearance. The front cover, process air inlets, cooling air inlet panels, airbox cover, outer mirror upper shells and the rear wing are made of carbon fiber. The titanium tailpipes are optically based on the exhaust system of the Porsche 935. The screwed-on roll cage at the rear is also made of titanium. The upper part of the dashboard in the interior is covered with Race-Tex. A large Porsche logo is integrated in the rear window. With the Weissach package, 20-inch forged magnesium wheels can be ordered instead of the standard forged aluminum wheels for a surcharge.

The sum of the improvements compared to the 718 Cayman GT4 makes the GT4 RS the most uncompromising and sharpest member of the 718 family. This becomes particularly clear on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. As part of the final coordination work, Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister lapped the 20,832 kilometer racetrack in 7: 09,300 minutes. The shorter version with a length of 20,6 kilometers, which used to serve as a benchmark, was completed by the GT4 RS in 7: 04,511 minutes - 23,6 seconds faster than the 718 Cayman GT4.

Most uncompromising and hottest member of the 718 family

The individual Porsche Design Chronograph 718 Cayman GT4 RS, which Porsche Design offers exclusively to buyers of the vehicle, is as sporty as the vehicle. Like its motorized model, it also relies on a lightweight construction concept with a performance character through the use of the resistant high-tech material titanium. The elevator rotor is modeled on the wheels of the sports car and can be selected in different colors to match the vehicle configuration.

The new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS will celebrate its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show, with delivery starting in December. The GT4 RS is also available with the optional Weissach package, which further improves aerodynamics. At the same time, the racing version is celebrating in Los Angeles 718 Cayman GT4 RS Club Sport Premiere, which will start in many national and international racing series from 2022.
