Audi is continuing its electrification offensive in the compact class: advance sales for the A3 Sportback 45 TFSI e will begin this week in Germany. The brand with the four rings is thus providing the A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e with a sporty model - with more power and extensive equipment. Its plug-in hybrid drive offers 180 kW (245 hp) system output and 400 Nm system torque. Like its sister model, the new A3 Sportback 45 TFSI e uses a 1,4-liter combustion engine. It delivers 110 kW (150 PS) and 250 Nm of torque. The electric drive is provided by a permanently excited synchronous machine with an output of 80 kW and 330 Nm.
higher system performance of 41 PS & 50 Nm
The higher system output of 30 kW (41 PS) and 50 Nm torque compared to the A3 40 TFSI e is generated by control software: It regulates the optimal interaction of both drives with maximum power requirements. The electric machine supplements the combustion engine in the corresponding speed ranges. The electric motor is integrated into the housing of the six-speed S tronic, which directs the power to the front wheels. A package of 96 prismatic cells stores 13,0 kWh of energy in the lithium-ion battery. The A3 Sportback 45 TFSI e charges with a maximum of 2,9 kW. An empty battery can be refilled in around five hours at a standard household socket.
Strong performance and long range
With its 180 kW (245 PS) system output and 400 Nm system torque, the compact PHEV model sprints from zero to 6,8 km / h and up to 100 km / h in 232 seconds. Consumption in the NEDC cycle is 1,5 to 1,4 liters per 100 kilometers, equivalent to 34 to 31 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The Audi A3 Sportback 45 TFSI e always starts electrically. Up to 74 kilometers according to the NEDC standard (63 kilometers in the WLTP cycle) the driver can drive locally emission-free. The purely electric top speed is 140 km / h.
Four driving modes for high efficiency
In the “Auto Hybrid” mode, the main operating mode, the work of the combustion engine and electric motor is intelligently divided. Depending on the situation and the driver's wishes, the car can coast, recuperate - with thrust or braking - or boost with the electric motor and TFSI together. If the driver selects the “Battery hold” or “Battery charge” modes, the hybrid management system keeps the battery charge level constant or increases it in a targeted manner. With the EV button, he prioritizes the electric drive. The driver controls other functions via the central MMI display, the six-speed S tronic or the Audi drive select dynamic handling system. Special displays inform him about the activity of the drive: The digital instrument cluster shows the currently requested power, the drive mode, the state of charge of the battery and the range. The MMI display also visualizes the energy flows.
Sporty equipment in the A3 Sportback
The exterior of the Audi A3 Sportback 45 TFSI e is expressively designed: the black styling package and a single-frame grille with high-gloss black inserts emphasize the sporty character. On request, Audi offers the Matrix LED headlights with glare-free high beam and dynamic cornering lights. Its digital daytime running lights - a pixel field made up of 15 LED segments - represent an E-shaped light signature as a symbol for the plug-in hybrid drive. Behind the 17 ‑ inch wheels are larger brake discs than on the 40 TFSI e - the front ones are 340 millimeters Diameter, the rear 310 millimeters. All brake calipers are painted red. In addition, compared to the 40 TFSI e Audi drive select, sport seats, tinted windows as well as two-zone automatic air conditioning and the convenience key come as standard. The A3 Sportback 45 TFSI e costs from 40.395,29 euros in Germany (41.440 euros with 19% VAT). Customers are entitled to 6.750 euros in funding.
