From series production to the racetrack - and back: In a video, BMW M GmbH provides insights into the development of the new BMW M4 GT3 racing car and shows exciting similarities between the new flagship in the BMW M Motorsport vehicle portfolio and the BMW M4 Competition series model (fuel consumption combined: 10,2 - 9,9 l / 100 km according to WLTP, 10,2 l / 100 km according to NEDC; CO2 emissions combined: 233 - 227 g / km according to WLTP, 234 g / km according to NEDC). Designers and engineers from BMW Series Development and BMW M Motorsport will present interesting details of the two vehicles. Anne Forschner, exterior designer BMW M4 Competition, and Michael Scully, BMW Group Designworks Global Automotive Directory kick off the BMW M4 design talk.

Right at the beginning of the video, the two talked about the most distinctive design feature of both vehicles: the BMW kidney grille. “All BMW M vehicles polarize and therefore do not automatically appeal to everyone. They move people, physically, but also emotionally, ”says Anne Forschner. "The kidney is the dominant element of the BMW M4 Competition and it was adopted in the racing car in an identical form," explains Michael Scully. At the front of the BMW M4 GT3, which is in the final year of its development phase and in the hands of BMW M Motorsport teams, will fight for victories and titles in GT races around the world from 2022, it shows other special details in which his team will face each other based on the production model.

In the side view, the racing car has not only taken over the lines from the A-pillar to the low-lying front of the vehicle. The roof, including two longitudinal fins, and the flat rear window are also shaped identically on the BMW M4 Competition and the BMW M4 GT3, which enables a perfect flow of air to the rear wing of the racing car.

The biggest differences between the two vehicles can be found at the rear. "The rear of the BMW M4 GT3 looks familiar in some areas, but looks significantly different in others," says Anne Forschner. "The racing car is 75 millimeters wider on each side, but we have adopted the taillights and the shape of the tailgate is identical," explains Michael Scully.

For Anne Forschner, the many similarities that make the production model appear very sporty and provide a very good basis for the racing version clearly reflect how the two vehicles were developed: “From the road to the racetrack and from the racetrack back to the Series. ”Michael Scully, on the other hand, praises his colleagues from series development. “The production model BMW M4 Competition is a great basis for turning it into a racing car. It has iconic elements and a geometry geared towards high performance and efficiency, ”he explains.

In a second video in a few weeks time, the focus will be on the common heart of the two vehicles. Marcus Engelke, Project Manager Drive BMW M4 and Ulrich Schulz, Head of Drive Design at BMW Motorsport, then talk about the six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, which was designed for use in road vehicles and on the racetrack right from the start.
