The special vehicle industry of rescue, fire brigade and police has been of great importance for Mercedes-Benz for decades. The Sprinter was used as an ambulance for the first time back in 1995 and today, as an emergency vehicle with various expansion options, it has a large market share in the healthcare sector. In times of a pandemic, the need for reliable ambulance and rescue vehicles is particularly great. At that time, Mercedes-Benz Vans and its partner Ambulanz Mobile GmbH & Co. KG from Schönebeck in Saxony-Anhalt developed a fully electric vehicle based on the eSprinter in the service of health.
Ambulance (eKTW)
With a range of 120[1] Kilometers and a top speed of up to 120 km / h, the electric ambulance (eKTW) is not only locally emission-free in the city but also in urban areas. Despite the necessary installations in the patient room, the eKTW does not exceed the total weight of 3,5 t. This enables drivers with a car driver's license to carry out the ambulance transport. For this, particular attention was paid to the installation of particularly weight-saving, yet high-quality materials. The power supply of the body is separated from that of the base vehicle by installing two control units and functions independently. This means that the function of the medical devices is independent of the vehicle battery.
"Like our conventionally powered vehicles, the eVans from Mercedes-Benz also offer a good basis for industry-specific solutions. I am pleased that together with our partner Ambulanz-Mobile we can offer a battery-electric powered ambulance for the first time, which now also carries out the safe transport of people locally emission-free and can thus contribute to the ecological relief of metropolitan areas“, Emphasizes Sven Dannenmann, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Vans Industry and Bodybuilder Center.
Handed over to the customer in mid-March!
Hans-Jürgen Schwarz, Managing Director Ambulanz Mobile GmbH & Co. KG: "We are very proud that Mercedes-Benz Vans started this project with us. It is a challenge to build a first fully electric ambulance and our special part is to make the supply and the supply facility at the rear self-sufficient from the base vehicle."
In mid-March, the eKTW in Bindow near Königs Wusterhausen was handed over to customers for the first time. In the evangelical aid organization Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe "Regionalverband Südbrandenburg" it has been used in test operation since then. The aid organization is closely accompanied by Ambulanz Mobile GmbH in order to implement findings from everyday operation in the further development of the vehicle, which is intended for Europe-wide sales.
Ambulanz Mobile GmbH - long-term "Mercedes-Benz VanPartner"
Mercedes-Benz Vans has been working closely with Ambulanz Mobile GmbH in the field of ambulance and rescue vehicles for a long time. Innovative projects such as the so-called “wish-wagon” of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) were the results of this cooperation. The project enables terminally ill people to fulfill one last wish, such as visiting the sea or visiting relatives. The vehicle is based on a conventional ambulance, contains basic emergency medical equipment and has enough space for individual adjustments to make the journey as comfortable and safe as possible for the patient.
