The high-speed record of the Super SUV Lamborghini Urus on the ice of Lake Baikal during the Days of Speed has been officially confirmed by the Russian Automobile Association (RAF), a member of FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile). The Russian driver and 18-time record holder of the Days-of-Speed, Andrey Leontyev, shares his experiences with setting records. With a top speed of 298 km / h and an average speed of 114 km / h from a standing start at 1.000 meters, the Lamborghini Urus has demonstrated above-average performance and exceptional handling despite reduced traction due to the smooth ice surface and the strong gusts of wind.

Andrey Leontyev, who was born in Moscow and grew up there, had a passion for engines and cars from an early age: he disassembled them as a child, reported on them during his career as a journalist, and drove them during his truck racing years. But his goal and eternal dream was to drive the fastest cars in the world and set world records under extreme conditions.
“When I saw the frozen Lake Baikal for the first time, it was immediately clear to me that the slope was ideal. Records had been set on prime asphalt roads and salt lakes all over the world, but we have nothing like that in Russia. We have a lot of ice cream instead, and that's how I got the idea. So I decided to go to Lake Baikal with a friend and did some races. Nobody believed that it would lead to anything, but we believed it would make a big difference. In the past ten years we have been recognized by the FIA, making our course records on ice official. We adhere to all the requirements of the FIA and have the legitimate prerequisites to be able to set records. "
Leoyntev describes his endeavors as top notch real sport. As such, the harmonious integration and balance between the psychological component and the technical preparation for both the car and the driver play an essential role for success.
“In motorsport there are two components of equal importance: the driver and the vehicle. If you want to set records, you shouldn't focus on just one. The driver's skills, the reliability and safety of the vehicle, and the on-board equipment can help the driver maximize performance: that's the magic combination. In our races, we push the limits of equipment and cars - well beyond their standard operating conditions. We must never forget that one person drives the car and gets these results, but without a great vehicle there is no success. "
With its V8 biturbo engine with 650 CV, the Urus has one of the highest specific outputs in its class and the best power-to-weight ratio and is one of the fastest Super SUVs in the world, capable of going from 3,6 in 0 seconds 100 km / h and accelerating from 12,8 to 0 km / h in 200 seconds and reaching a top speed of 305 km / h. Leontyev felt at one with him:
“The greatest advantage of the Urus is its absolute versatility: It is extremely easy and comfortable to use in any situation and gives the feeling of forming a strong unit with it. Despite its significant performance, supercar roots and supercar demeanor, the Urus is lenient and helpful towards its driver. I am convinced that even an inexperienced driver who should drive on a racetrack would show a strong performance with this vehicle. The same person could drive this car to their own summer house or to the country with friends. The nature of the compromises under which it was made is astounding, and nothing in this vehicle has been sacrificed for anything else. Each of its features has been perfected. I have great respect for the company's performance: you have achieved something that no one has ever done before, and it was the same with my record. "
Setting records on ice is not just a vocation that arises from a love of sport and follows the hunger for adrenaline, they also represent an important contribution to the automotive industry:
“We are like an independent test laboratory. Automotive engineers can see how their products will behave when their limits are pushed on a surface that is 10 times smoother than asphalt in heavy rain. In other words, if you are able to maintain control of a vehicle that is racing over a natural uneven layer of ice at 300 km / h and jumping over bumps, which constantly stresses the suspension to the limit, then that seems to be the case Driving a car over a wet or frozen paved lane at 90 km / h no longer seems to be such a big deal. The techniques that were developed under extreme conditions can easily be adopted for daily use and make driving safer, easier and more enjoyable. Modern auto designers and engineers go to great lengths to ensure that vehicles are as safe as possible while at the same time letting people enjoy the experience of driving. And the fun of driving is something that I won't let be taken away from me. "
