Welcome back - Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 Red Pig!

Photos by Arthur Bechtel Classic Motors

The legendary red sow is back. And quite in contrast to the Mercedes 280 SEL W 109 widebody from Reviva as "Red Pig 2" this time it is back as a real hit. From the German company Arthur Bechtel Classic Motors from Böblingen. The company has been a family-run business for classic vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, independent of Daimler AG, since 1972. And the company has been building a red sow for everyone on request for about 2 years. At least if you are close 340.000 € has on the high edge. But there is an almost identical copy of the original from 1971. And not only that. Also a full 12 month guarantee, customer support at customs, photographic documentation of the restoration, worldwide delivery, import and approval and even the first customer service in the Classic car workshop from Arthur Bechtel Classic Motors.

And one thing is for sure, the replica of the 300 SEL 6.3 Red sow even after 50 years it is more noticeable than any Porsche 911, BMW M3 or Mercedes-AMG. But where does the name come from? For the then small tuner AMG, the red sow was the jumping hill to world fame. Mercedes manufactured the 300 SEL 6.3 (W 109 series) in the period from 1967 to 1972. And on racing he should never actually participate. With a live weight of almost 1,8 tonnes and far too much body, the sedan was unsuitable for the wild cornering. Reason enough that Mercedes promptly abandoned the 300 SEL 6.3 racing car project.

But Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher continued with AMG. They built from a former W-109 accident vehicle a real racer with engine tuning on last 428 PS & 620 NM by means of many OEM Mercedes parts. There was also a Five-speed manual transmission with racing clutch and many more modifications which end up with a top speed of 265 km/h made possible. And of course the W 109 Painted bright red. This also led to the name “Rote Sau”.

1971 victory in the Spa 24 Hours

And the Rote Sau actually won in 1971 at the Spa 24 Hours Class win and took the overall ranking second place. The heavy and fast vehicle with a displacement of 6.834 cm³ was only “only” second because frequent refueling was necessary and tire wear was above average. What happened to the vehicle after that, however, is not known. And anyone who thinks they have seen the original in the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart is mistaken.

It is one Factory replica from 2005. And one of those Replica offers Arthur Bechtel Classic Motors for private customers. The base vehicle is of course a W 109, which is completely gutted and restored. Then it is "optically" made into a red sow. To you remove the aprons, mounted the big ones in front additional lights, painted the classic bright red and also the Sponsors Stickers come from the original. Of course, the eye-catching ones should not be missing Wheel arch extensions and Racing interior.

there are also many changes in the cabin

The interior is characterized by black leather bucket seats, one painted black Roll cage, Sparco seat belts and a chic one Sport steering wheel out. With regard to the landing gear, there is one lowered sports suspension and a set of ultra chic Fuchs motorsport rims with an XXL low bed. And under the hood? There he stays Series engine with 6,3 liter displacement and 250 hp untouched. But at least the customer can choose whether to keep the original gearbox or a newer one Getrag five-speed automatic is installed. PS.
