Porsche sends two 911 Turbo S as security vehicles on a trip around the world!

The 478 kW (650 hp; 911 Turbo S: combined fuel consumption (WLTP) 12,3 – 12,0 l/100 km, combined CO₂ emissions* (WLTP) 278 – 271 g/km, combined fuel consumption* (NEDC) 11,1, 100 l/254 km, CO₂ emissions* combined (NEDC) 2,7 g/km), the powerful 100 sprints from zero to 330 km/h in XNUMX seconds and reaches a top speed of XNUMX km/h. For use as a safety car in the FIA WEC, the sports car from Weissach has been extensively equipped with data and transmission technology, as well as a light signal system and two additional monitors in the cockpit.

“The large LED element on the roof flashes amber lights when the safety car is in operation. If necessary, we can light up the middle area in green,” explains Adam Kot, who is responsible for using and maintaining the safety cars at Porsche partner Manthey. Green means: The following vehicles are allowed to overtake until the leading car in the race has lined up behind the Porsche 911 Turbo S. The controls for the large lighting system on the roof and for the flashing lights at the front and rear of the safety car have been moved to the front trunk. The radio connection to the race control including the power supply and the electronics for the so-called marshalling system are also housed there in a space-saving manner. It reflects the status of flag signals along the route.

"Compared to the street model, there are new switches installed in the center console, plus a red radio button on the steering wheel, the roll bar and two full-bucket racing seats with six-point belts," reports Adam Kot. At the same time, the Porsche 911 Turbo S received a special chassis tuned for the racetrack. The Portuguese Pedro Couceiro and Yannick Dalmas will also be driving the safety car in the 2022 season. In 1994, the Frenchman achieved overall victory at the 962 Hours of Le Mans at the wheel of a Porsche 24.

The safety vehicles, which travel the world in containers together with the two 911 RSRs from the works team, are also used outside of the races and training sessions: on every day of a WEC event, the safety car drivers complete inspection laps to close the signaling system and the radio check. "Overall, the cars don't get many kilometers on the counter," explains Adam Kot, adding: "On average, the cars drive around 1.000 kilometers a year. We don't have to do much in terms of maintenance and care: fill up with fuel, check tires and brakes - that's it."
Two new safety cars in the familiar black and red design are available at all WEC season rounds. Special rules only apply to the 24 Hours of Le Mans due to the particularly long distance of 13,623 kilometers: there, if necessary, several safety cars are deployed at the same time. For this event, which is the highlight of the year in the Endurance World Championship in June, Manthey is preparing three additional Porsche 911 Turbo S accordingly. "The provision of the safety cars is one aspect of the trusting cooperation with the FIA WEC organization and the Le Mans organizer ACO," says Alexander Stehlig, Head of Factory Motorsport FIA WEC. “We are pleased that from this year we will be able to see the extremely powerful and fast 911 Turbo S for use in incidents on the track.” The new vehicles for the ACO will be delivered to France in the coming weeks. Your first assignment at the Sarthe is scheduled for 16/17. April at the 24-hour race for motorcycles on the program.
