Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles are presenting the new ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo01 in front. With the first purely electrically powered bus and van series in Europe, Volkswagen is providing a further answer to sustainable and CO₂-free mobility. The ID Buzz comes with the latest ID. software and sets new standards in its segment in terms of safety, convenience and charging with the most modern systems and functions.
ID. Buzz from Volkswagen
Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars: “The ID. Buzz is a true icon for the electric age. A car that only Volkswagen can build like this. In the 50s, the Volkswagen Bulli represented a new feeling of automotive freedom, independence and great emotion. The ID. Buzz and transfers it into our time: emission-free, sustainable, fully connected and now ready for the next big chapter - autonomous driving. With this car, we are bringing the core issues of our ACCELERATE strategy together in one product for the first time.”

- Space: The ID Buzz offers space for five people and 1.121 liters of luggage - and as cargo for two Euro pallets
- Market launch: Launch in Europe in autumn 2022. Advance sales will start in the first countries as early as May
Carsten Intra, CEO of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand, adds: “Both versions of the ID. Buzz are groundbreaking in terms of their sustainability: they become CO on the balance sheet2- neutrally manufactured and delivered. In addition, recycled plastics are used and the interior is completely free of animal leather.” And further: “The ID. Buzz will also be used in future autonomous mobility concepts such as ride pooling – an e-shuttle service from the subsidiary MOIA that can be booked via an app. So the electric Bulli is also part of the future of inner-city transport.”
Like all models of the ID. family of Volkswagen passenger cars is also based on the ID built by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Hanover. Buzz technically based on the group's modular electric drive matrix (MEB). The world's first scalable large-scale series platform for purely electric cars provides the basis for a wide variety of models and segments across brands. Its architecture allows an evolutionary further development of software and technology, from which both new models such as the ID. Buzz as well as models that have already been delivered can benefit from an over-the-air update.
ID. Software of the latest generation with new assistance and loading functions.
The assistance systems of the new series perfect comfort and safety. This is how the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo has the local warning system "Car2X" on board as standard, which uses signals from other vehicles and the traffic infrastructure to identify dangers in real time. Also standard: the emergency brake assistant "Front Assist" and in the minibus the lane departure warning system "Lane Assist". With new software, new assistance functions are also finding their way into the ID. Family: The "Travel Assist with swarm data" is optionally available, which enables semi-automated driving across the entire speed range and, for the first time, assisted lane changes on the motorway. Also new: the "memory function" for automated parking on a previously saved route.
Up to 170 kW charging power, Plug & Charge and bidirectional charging.
Throughout Europe, the ID. Buzz and the ID. Buzz Cargo started with a 77 kWh battery (gross energy content: 82 kWh). It supplies a 150 kW electric machine with power, which - like the boxer engine in the T1 - drives the rear axle. The battery integrated deep down in the sandwich floor and the light electric drive result in good weight distribution and a low vehicle center of gravity. Both factors optimize handling and agility. The lithium-ion battery is charged at wall boxes and public charging points with 11 kW alternating current (AC). The charging power increases to up to 170 kW via a CCS plug on a DC fast charging station (direct current); the battery is charged from 30 to 5 percent in around 80 minutes. The series will also be equipped with the latest ID. software will also offer the "Plug & Charge" function in the future. The ID authenticates itself. Buzz via charging plug on compatible DC fast charging stations with the ISO 15118 standard and thus exchanges all necessary data with the charging point - a convenience plus. Bidirectional charging allows the ID. Buzz to feed unused energy from the battery into the customer's home network (vehicle-to-home). Power transfer and communication take place via a special DC BiDi wall box.
Iconic design: The ID. Buzz is the new face of sustainable mobility. The visual bracket around the future-oriented technologies is the unique design of the ID. buzz “The T1 – an icon of the 1950s – gave people mobility and freedom. With the ID. Buzz, we transfer this T1 DNA to the present day and thus to the era of electromobility,” outlines Jozef Kabaň, Head of Volkswagen Design. "The ID. Buzz brings a lot of sympathy and the closeness to people back to the street,” the chief designer continues. And it's the proportions that make the ID. Make Buzz so unique. Kabaň bridges the gap to the classic: "With the T1, I'm practically sitting on the front axle - no front overhang. With all safety relevance and technology, the ID. Buzz super short overhangs.” The designer sums it up: “The ID. Buzz is timeless, sustainable and at the same time extremely functional – that makes it unique.” The iconic front section with its V-shaped hood between the charismatic LED headlights has always been typical of the series. This also applies to the optional two-tone paint finish.
Pleasantly designed, spacious interior for a life on the move. Drivers and passengers of the ID. Buzz experience the new Bulli feeling in a generously designed interior. Typical Bulli: the layout is very clear, the concept well thought out and the use of space optimal: five people have plenty of room to travel and their luggage (volume 1.121 liters) in the lounge-like, friendly ambience of the bus version. If the second row of seats is folded down, the loading volume increases to up to 2.205 liters. Depending on your choice, two or three seats in the front and a fixed partition to 3,9 m3 large cargo space characterize the ID. Buzz Cargo. The zero-emission transporter can take two Euro pallets loaded sideways.
Long wheelbase, compact body, maximum use of traffic space. the ID Buzz and the ID. Buzz Cargo is characterized by the long wheelbase of 2.988 mm; this roughly corresponds to the value of the current T6.1. The length of both versions is 4.712 mm. Thanks to the wheelbase, which is very large in relation to the overall length, the traffic area is optimally used. Both versions of the ID. Buzz, including the roof antenna, measure between 1.937 mm and 1.938 mm in height, depending on the equipment. At 1.985mm, the new model is 81mm wider than a T6.1. However, the turning circle of 11,1 meters is unusually small.
The first bus with the cw-value of a car
Even with the T1, the first Bulli, design followed function. Form follows function - this central tenet of automobile construction also applies to the design of the ID. buzz The iconic, clear shapes are contrasted with excellent aerodynamics: The ID. Buzz comes on a cwvalue of 0,285, the ID. Buzz Cargo to 0,29. This reduces energy consumption and increases the range.
Made in Germany. The ID Buzz series is produced by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in the main plant in Hanover. The majority of the electric drive modules delivered there will also be manufactured in Germany with the highest quality standards - in this case by the independent group division Volkswagen Group Components. Since 2022, the Hanover plant has belonged to the group of high-tech locations for the production of fully electric vehicles. In general, it is also true that Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has started a transformation process in order to be able to offer more electrified models in the future. Where a Bulli series was once produced in Hanover, three Bulli product columns are now being produced in parallel - two of them electrified. As a zero-emission vehicle, the ID. Buzz and the ID. Buzz Cargo the production line - they testify to a mobility choice that allows their owners to meet the climatic challenges of our time.
European advance sales start in May, market launch in autumn. The ID Buzz and the ID. Buzz Cargo will be launched in the first European countries this autumn; Advance sales are already planned for May. Volkswagen of America will launch the ID. Buzz also initiated the comeback of the so-called Microbus in the USA and Canada.
