A pair of Road trip in the USA is the ideal way to discover the United States: it allows you to travel whenever and wherever you want. You can enter, travel through or bypass every state in the Americas. Road trips have always been, and will continue to be, a popular pastime in America. What could be better than being behind the wheel of a car and exploring a variety of stunning coastal vistas, dramatic valleys, rugged cliffs, lush forests and endless desert landscapes? Road trips have been immortalized in classic novels, well-known films and legendary songs.

Many associate the trip with exploring the city, activities such as a helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon or a visit to the casino in Las Vegas, where they would like to try their luck at poker or roulette. There are numerous routes, and all have their own merits and, in some cases, special features. Following are some of the best!

ROUTE 66 – FROM CHICAGO TO CALIFORNIA

Luxury SUVs are popular for Route 66 rentals because they are both rugged and stylish. For example, opt for a Lincoln Navigator. Route 66, the original transportation route from Chicago to Los Angeles, stretches an impressive 2.451 miles (approx. 3.945 km) and has now been replaced by the modern interstate highway system to reduce travel time and distance.

Nevertheless, the history of this street remains irreplaceable and it is what makes it so popular today. With numerous notable historic highway towns and vast, barren desert landscapes, this is a road trip not to be missed. Explore the sights of downtown Chicago, tour St. Louis and stop at the unique Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo.

THE PATH TO THE SUN – MONTANA

Since most park roads are paved but some are quite narrow, renting a compact vehicle like the Tesla Model 3 or Nissan Versa is a good choice, especially for traveling couples. The 80-kilometer, rocky mountain road is the only connection through Glacier National Park in northwestern Montana - and it is a real highlight.

From Route 2 or Route 86, this east/west, west/east tour in Montana takes you on an impressive tour across the continental divide, through dense green forests along Lake Mac Donald, down into deep valleys below in just an hour and a half of glacier-capped peaks and to Saint Mary Lake, where you can see the 160-meter high, gushing crystal waterfall. This street is a real feast for the eyes. So be sure to spot mountain goats, bighorn sheep and other wildlife that roam here.

PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY - CALIFORNIA

For an exciting driving experience, rent a convertible like a Ford Mustang or Chevrolet Camaro to cruise the coast. This type of rental vehicle is ideal for enjoying the California sun and having the experience of driving on an open road. It's easy to see why the famous Pacific Coast Highway is considered one of the best roads in the United States.

The route starts in San Diego and runs through some of the most impressive coastal scenery in California. Tour Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, Hearst Castle and follow the iconic Highway One north to the charming seaside town of Monterey. Your final destination is the famous City by the Bay and there are many fascinating areas to explore in San Francisco.

RED ROCK COUNTRY—ARIZONA

For example, reserve a VW Jetta or a Chrysler 200. This vehicle category is ideal if you are looking for a shorter drive with fascinating geological features. The easy 145-mile route along Interstate 17, including a small detour via Route 179 (Red Rock Scenic Byway) and the 89a towards Flagstaff, Arizona, or south to Phoenix, undoubtedly provides an exceptional road trip experience that should not be missing in this top 10 list.

Contrasted with dense green, orange and vibrant forests, this route traverses seemingly endless desert landscapes and breathtaking rock formations that tower over the horizon and give you the feeling of being on an alien planet. Be sure to stop to admire Montezuma Castle National Monument or visit Rock State Park, where you can slide down a natural waterslide carved into the rock.

OLYMPIC PENINSULA—WASHINGTON

If you want to take some of your hiking gear with you, we recommend renting an SUV. A mid-size model like the Jeep Wrangler or Toyota RAV4 offers enough space for five people and proves to be a good option for longer trips. To start this 330-mile loop, begin in Seattle and head to the Olympic Peninsula by taking exit 531 onto the 104 freeway.

You can do the tour either clockwise or counter-clockwise. Either way, you'll enjoy spectacular views of the sparkling peaks of the Olympic Ranges' White Mountains, scenic coastlines, thundering waterfalls, small logging towns and beautiful Lake Crescent, America's most beautiful lake.

CAPE COD-MASSACHUSETTS

Treat yourself to some luxury and rent a Cadillac XTS or a Chevy Suburban, for example, to experience a comfortable road trip with enough space for the whole family and luggage. Unlike the busy SH 6 freeway or the crowded and built-up Route 28 along the south coast, the 57-mile stretch along Cape Cod's historic and scenic Route 92a is a guaranteed hit on this list.

From Sandwich to Brewster, you'll find stunning dune landscapes and charming historic villages dating back to 1639, including the old Brewster Store, which dates back to the 1850s. As you drive to Orleans, be sure to admire the finest beaches along this leg before exploring the next 2.000 acres of dense pine and oak forests and scattered freshwater ponds of Nickerson State Park. Continue through Truro on SH 6 and then turn left onto Route 6a, which will take you along the scenic bay to your final destination, vibrant Provincetown.

BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY - VIRGINIA

Experience outstanding performance in a muscle car like the Dodge Challenger. With a total length of 469 miles (approx. 755 km) linking Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to Great Smokey Mountains National Park in North Carolina, the Blue Ridge Parkway offers a driving experience that is one of a kind. With no advertising signs, no commercial traffic, and no commercial towns, driving at a 45 mph speed limit is a pleasure while enjoying one of America's most scenic scenic drives.

Departing from either Boone or Cherokee, embark on the Blue Ridge Parkway Road for a 5,5 hour journey of mountainous scenery, occasional ghostly fog, waterfalls, wild turkeys and birds, bright red acidic forests, deep red and bright yellow forests in the... Autumn (late September to October) and a diverse array of wildflowers that bloom in orange, white, pink, purple and red in spring (May to June). An unforgettable adventure to enjoy at any time of the year.
