Vehicles as colorful as life - BMW Individual!

“Vehicles as colorful as we do” is the motto of an employee initiative that brings the diversity at the BMW Group Plant Leipzig closer to everyone who works there. Now the slogan is getting even more meaningful, because the automotive world at the Leipzig plant is becoming even more colorful. Vehicles with individual paintwork have been manufactured since today. The first BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, which are produced for customers who have opted for a more unusual paint color, shine in Speed Yellow, San Marino Blue, Verde Ermes Green and Nardo Gray. Black and white are still among the most popular colors, but customers' desire for expressive car paintwork and more individuality is growing. The option of being able to order the BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé in around 160 colors is widely used, despite a surcharge for matt and individual colors.

Vehicles as colorful as life

The order books at the Leipzig plant for vehicles with custom paints are well filled by the end of the year. The next big order is being manufactured for the Japanese market: 180 BMW 118d in the paintwork Hockenheim silver, ruby red and sepia violet. A lead time of around ten weeks is required so that the customer's special request for a preferred individual color can be met. It is even possible to have a custom-made color created individually by the customer, which is then only used once. In order to be able to apply individual paintwork to the smaller series as well, an existing paint shop was enabled for individual paintwork. In addition, new paint supply systems and a new paint mixing room were integrated. Five vehicles per day can currently be manufactured with individual paintwork.

higher service and support costs

For the employees in the paint shop, the special colors mean a higher service and support effort than with the models in standard colors. Processes such as acceptance cannot be automated, but must be carried out manually. That is why the number of employees in the paint shop was increased by ten. Matt lacquers are particularly time-consuming and demanding, in which defects cannot be treated as part of a conventional surface treatment as with the gloss lacquer variants. Around 30 minutes more preparation per vehicle has to be invested in the matt-finished BMW. There are currently two matt colors available: Frozen Black and Frozen Orange.

Even if the custom paintwork at the Leipzig plant is only just beginning, a few particularly popular shades can be identified based on the orders: yellow, blue, red and purple shades are particularly in demand. This not only ensures more variety and color in the street scene, but also in the paint shop and on the assembly lines at the Leipzig plant. The diverse possibilities can be experienced in the BMW Individual Visualizer.
