Successor for the BMW i8? Secret i16 never went into series production!

In year 2019 presented BMW and the BMW Vision M Next Concept, an exciting and futuristically designed sports car that offers a concrete outlook on a possible successor to the plug-in hybrid athlete i8 should give. As a possible star of the Munich model range, it should pay homage to the legendary M1 which caused a sensation in the late 1970s. Things had been quiet about the concept car for a long time, but now the news has come out BMW design boss Domagoj Dukec a big secret when he announced that a potential successor to the i8 was named i16 should hear, and visually closely resembles the Vision M Next Concept, was in the pipeline. The vehicle, which the public had not previously known about, was... Halo Car intended for the Bavarian brand.

However, he fell due to the Corona pandemic, and the associated circumstances, fell victim to the red pencil. Nevertheless, we would now like to introduce you to the canceled project, which has so far remained completely under wraps, in more detail. As you can see, the design has clear parallels to the one already mentioned Concept car from 2019. Trapezoidal headlights, which are vaguely reminiscent of the current 2 Series (G87), and a face that borrows from the first generation of the 6 Series Coupé (E63), testify to its affiliation with the BMW brand. With a long wheelbase and Gran Turismo proportions, this car also looks much more suitable for everyday use than the i8, which has a hypercar-like design.

Especially from the rear, clear associations with the blessed M1 are aroused, as the long rear section is probably not just a coincidence reminiscent of the Munich legend. The narrow taillights, on the other hand, have certain Italian vibes and could also come from Maranello or Modena. What is particularly striking, however, is the bicolor scheme, which sets the color of the rear part of the flank apart from the rest of the car.

This eye-catcher would probably have been omitted in series production, but it gives the prototype a very special charm. The add-on parts of the body are particularly extroverted with integrated air inlets behind the B-pillar, which are somewhat reminiscent of the protective shell of a turtle or an armadillo. These features are also intended to evoke associations with cars from the late 1970s and early 1980s.

A plug-in hybrid powertrain was planned

The concept would have been similar to the i8, but the aim of the BMW engineers was to increase the system performance to more than 600 PS to catapult. The poor performance of the i8 should finally be forgotten and the supercar, which will probably be called the i16, should not be burdened in terms of driving dynamics. The planned competitors were from the beginning Audi R8 as the Mercedes-AMG GT.

Our conclusion:

  • It's a real shame that this sports car project was canceled at the last minute. With handsome styling and a competitive powertrain, this car could have been successful.

About Markus Castedo

I have had a passion for automobiles since early childhood, for example, as a child I owned more than 300 Matchbox cars. So you could say that cars have always been my passion, and that hasn't changed to this day. Of course, it was always very obvious that I wanted to have something to do with my greatest hobby professionally. Because I have a passion for extraordinary automobiles, I also began my career as a copywriter and blogger with an online blog for Chinese automobiles, which went online in 2018 but no longer exists. Because I find cars that you see on every corner boring, it came in handy when I wrote my first orders for tuningblog at the end of 2018 and have been expressing my passion for special automobiles there ever since. Of course, it gives me great pleasure to inform you every day about the latest tuning projects from all over the world.
