2021 BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé - decidedly sporty!

After the great success of the previous model, the new BMW 4 Series is now being expanded to include a four-door coupé. The second generation of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé impresses with noticeably increased driving dynamics, a sharpened design in the brand's new design language, a refined premium look in the interior and numerous innovations in the areas of operation and networking. In addition to the driving pleasure typical of the brand and sporty elegance, the vehicle concept of a Gran Coupé in the premium segment of the mid-size class is primarily characterized by its modern functionality. Comfortable access to the rear, five fully-fledged seats, a large tailgate and a variable luggage compartment give the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé its model-specific qualities in everyday life and when traveling.

For the market launch of the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, which begins in November 2021, a performance automobile from BMW M GmbH and four other model variants will be available for the first time. They are produced as part of flexible production at the BMW Group plant in Munich on an assembly line with the all-electric BMW i4 as well as with the models of the BMW 3 Series Sedan and the BMW 3 Series Touring.

Individual proportions, variably usable interior.

The distinctive character of the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is clearly expressed in its exterior design. With an external length of 4 millimeters, a width of 783 millimeters and a height of 1 millimeters, it has individual proportions in conjunction with dynamically stretched coupé lines. The dimensions of the previous model are exceeded by 852 millimeters in length, 1 millimeters in width and 442 millimeters in height. The track widths increased by 143 to 27 millimeters at the front and by 53 to 50 millimeters at the rear. At 1 millimeters, the wheelbase is 595 millimeters higher than the value of the predecessor and 29 millimeters higher than the value of the BMW 1 Series Sedan.

The model-specific body concept leads to a variably usable interior and to a generous amount of space in the rear. The luggage compartment of the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé has a capacity of 470 liters. Compared to the previous model, the directly visible primary volume has been increased by 39 liters. The storage space can be expanded to up to 40 liters by folding down the rear seat backrest, which can be divided as standard in a ratio of 20:40:1.

Expressive front, elegant silhouette, powerful rear.

Striking lines and three-dimensionally modeled surfaces characterize the expressive front of the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé. In its center, the large, vertically aligned BMW kidney grille that extends far down conveys a self-confident presence. The flat, full-LED headlights have U-shaped light guides for the daytime running lights. Adaptive LED headlights with BMW laser light and glare-free high beam assistant BMW Selective Beam are optionally available.

Precise lines, doors with frameless panes and integrated handles as well as the powerful shoulder area characterize the sporty, elegant silhouette of the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé. The roof line ends in a clearly exposed air spoiler on the luggage compartment lid. Horizontal lines dominate the rear view. In addition, the flat and powerful stature of the vehicle is emphasized by a rear apron with vertical spoiler edges in the outer areas and a black lower end. The stylishly darkened rear lights, made entirely of LED technology, protrude far into the side sections.

Dynamic accents are set with the independent design features for the M Sport equipment and the BMW M automobile. An M Carbon exterior package is available as an option, and model-specific M Performance Parts are also available in the Original BMW Accessories range.

Interior: driving pleasure and space comfort in a premium ambience.

In the interior of the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, the high center console and the surface structure that flows from the dashboard into the door panels create an all-encompassing feeling of space on the front seats. The start / stop button for the drive is located in a high-quality control panel on the center console, where, in addition to the model-specific gear selector switch, the BMW controller as well as the buttons for the driving experience switch unit and the electromechanical parking brake are located. The rear bench seat with folding headrests enables three child seats to be attached.

Sports seats and a sports leather steering wheel are standard equipment. The dynamic style of the interior is emphasized in the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé and in connection with the M Sport model, among other things, by knee pads on the center console. The range of special equipment offers extensive options for customization. Driving pleasure and comfort can be achieved, among other things, with seat heating and seat ventilation, Vernasca leather upholstery and BMW Individual leather upholstery, instrument panels in Sensatec and leather, the M Sport Package Pro, a large sliding glass roof as well as the Ambient Light and Harman Increase Kardon Surround Sound System.

A clear plus in dynamics and efficiency thanks to the latest four- and six-cylinder engines and 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

With a performance automobile at the top of the model range, the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé underscores its significantly increased sportiness. The BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé is powered by a 275 kW / 374 PS in-line six-cylinder petrol engine. A new four-cylinder gasoline engine is used in the BMW 430i Gran Coupé, which generates 180 kW / 245 PS and whose emissions behavior is further optimized by an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head. The four-cylinder gasoline engine in the BMW 420i Gran Coupé has a maximum output of 135 kW / 184 hp. A 140 kW 190 PS four-cylinder diesel engine powers the BMW 420d Gran Coupé and BMW 420d xDrive Gran Coupé.

In the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé and in the diesel engine variants, mild hybrid technology provides a further plus in dynamism and efficiency. The 48-volt starter generator provides an additional output of 8 kW / 11 PS when starting and accelerating. With an additional battery, the options for recovering and storing braking energy are optimized.

All engines are combined with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. The optional 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission (standard in the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé) offers a sprint function in addition to even greater shift dynamics and shift paddles on the steering wheel. By influencing the drive and shift characteristics accordingly, it ensures maximum dynamics in intermediate sprints and overtaking maneuvers.

High body rigidity, optimized aerodynamic properties.

The sporty characteristics of the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé are also enhanced by the vehicle's low center of gravity and the axle load distribution, which is almost 50:50. An intelligent mix of materials optimizes the weight of the body and chassis technology. Model-specific body struts in the front of the vehicle and in the area of the rear axle also contribute to the high level of agility and precision in driving behavior.

An active air flap control system, consisting of upper and lower flaps, air curtains and an almost completely closed underbody optimize the aerodynamic properties. The drag coefficient (CWValue) has been reduced by 0,02 points to 0,26 (BMW 420d Gran Coupé) compared to the previous model.

High-quality chassis technology with model-specific coordination.

A model-specific geometry, connection and coordination of its high-quality chassis technology help the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé to achieve superior driving dynamics. The double-joint tension strut suspension strut front axle and the five-link rear axle have a design that is optimized in terms of weight and rigidity. As standard, stroke-dependent shock absorbers optimize both sportiness and driving comfort. They generate additional damping that is dependent on the spring travel, which controls the structure when driving over large bumps and prevents excessive immersion. The system reacts to slight bumps in the road with low damping forces, which result in a high level of comfort.

The stroke-dependent shock absorbers in conjunction with the optional M sports suspension and in the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé have particularly tight characteristics. The maximum range between sportiness and comfort can be experienced with the Adaptive M suspension, which is also available as an option. It combines the features of the M sports suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers. The variable sports steering is part of the two optional chassis variants. An M sports brake system (standard in the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé) is available as a further option.

The new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is fitted with 17-inch light-alloy wheels as standard. The standard equipment of the new BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé includes 18-inch M light alloy wheels and an M sport differential with an electronically controlled, fully variable locking function in the rear axle differential. It is optional and also available for the BMW 430i Gran Coupé in conjunction with the M sports suspension or the Adaptive M suspension.

Great variety of driver assistance systems.

Around 4 assistance functions for comfortable and safe driving and parking are available as standard or as an option in the new BMW 40 Series Gran Coupé. The highlights include active cruise control with automatic Speed Limit Assist, route control and the traffic light recognition system that can be used in Germany, as well as the steering and lane guidance assistant.

Advanced networking and new digital services.

Even with the standard equipment, the driver and passengers in the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé benefit from the expanded options associated with the use of the BMW Operating System 7. Depending on the situation, the customer can choose between touch controls on the Control Display, the tried and tested BMW controller, the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, and voice and optional BMW gesture control. Advanced digital services are also available, including the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the BMW Digital Key, Connected Music and remote software upgrades.
