The "Track Package" for the Model S Plaid will be available shortly, Tesla announced on Twitter on Thursday and showed a foretaste of it in a video: The speedometer shows a speed of 322 km/h before stopping abruptly (see Photo). A good two years after the introduction of the Plaid electric car, the vehicle could now for the first time reach the top speed that Tesla advertised from the start. Because at the same time, the racing package appeared in the online shop, which expressly mentions that it is the "Unlocking the top speed of 322 km/h" contains.
Race pack in two versions
The Track Package According to information in the German and US shops, it is not yet available immediately, but only from June. However, some YouTubers have already received a demonstration from Tesla, including in Europe, according to videos released on Thursday. According to the shop description, the package includes special carbon-ceramic brake discs along with forged calipers. In fact, there are even two versions of the package: New 20-inch rims and tires can be installed as an option.
Tesla states the prices in the German shop as €13.825 to €18.435. Apparently, only customers with an app can understand how this is to be understood: for €13.825 you only get the more powerful brakes, while the higher price also includes the 20-inch rims and tires. In the description, the improved brakes are explicitly mentioned for unlocking the 322 km/h top speed, while tires and rims generally have to be "approved for this speed".
Purchasing the smaller track pack might be enough!
In case of doubt, it seems sufficient to buy the smaller track package from Tesla to get the unlock. One of the previously informed YouTubers explained in his video that the Model S Plaid automatically recognizes whether the special brake kit is installed and then adjusts the maximum possible speed. He did not mention checking the tires. Another YouTube tester shared a similar sentiment, adding that the company says the Goodyear tires offered by Tesla are not yet road legal in Europe.
Price reduction for Plaid brakes in the Model S
At the time of the first deliveries in June 2021, it became known that the Model S Plaid presented at the beginning of the same year could not easily reach a speed of 322 km/h. At the time, Tesla added a note in the configurator that special rims and tires were required. They were supposed to be available in the fall, but instead a $20.000 brake package appeared in Tesla's US store in November. It appears that this is the same upgrade now being offered as part of the Track Package. What's new is that this price now also includes the 20-inch rims with track tires, and the Plaid brakes alone can be purchased in the US for $15.000. Photo credit: Tesla Motors
