On December 1, 2021, Mercedes-Benz will honor Virgil Abloh with a presentation of Project MAYBACH in the Rubell Museum. Instead of the originally planned press event, the work is now open to the public on December 01st and 02nd. Students from local design schools will have exclusive access on December 01st from 11.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. As a modest contribution to Virgil's legacy, the Mercedes-Maybach show car illustrates the possibilities of future designs. It is the result of a longstanding collaboration with the all-rounder, artist, architect, creative director, fashion designer and philanthropist - driven by a shared passion to enrich the discourse on luxury design.
Off-road coupe by Virgil Abloh
“Mercedes-Benz deeply regrets the death of Virgil Abloh. Our thoughts are with Virgil's family and teams. In order to respectfully honor the work of a unique talented designer who, through his unbridled imagination, has created endless opportunities for collaboration and has inspired everyone who knew his work, Mercedes-Benz Project is opening up MAYBACH and thus Virgil's unique vision to the public. "- Mercedes-Benz AG
Project MAYBACH
Project MAYBACH was developed from scratch - a design that Mercedes-Benz has never shown before. Gorden Wagener and Virgil Abloh have interpreted the brand's luxury functionality with a new design language, breaking new ground in terms of functional design, style and their collaborative creativity. Inspired by the great outdoors, the two-seater, battery-electric off-road coupé combines impressive Gran Turismo proportions, large off-road wheels and distinctive add-on parts and thus connects a traditionally urban brand with a clearly distinguishable off-road environment.
A vision of responsible future design was important for Abloh and Wagener. Detached from any production requirements and with absolute creative freedom, the design teams have developed a vision of luxurious travel in the age of electric driving. Under the transparent surface of the front hood of the show car, for example, there are solar cells that increase the imaginary range of Project MAYBACH.
polarized by provocative design
Project MAYBACH does not shy away from polarizing with provocative design and manifests Abloh's passion to question the status quo and to rewrite the rules for sophisticated design. The X-factor of Project MAYBACH results not only from its impressive dimensions - almost six meters in length - and its very own character traits, but above all from its exciting contrasts - mainly determined by the design motif "Sophisticated Luxury meets Outdoor Adventure".
The appeal of Abloh's work lies not only in the product design, but also in the exploratory conversations that his work has inspired. While the Project MAYBACH showcar was inspired by how Maybach allows one to explore nature in a unique luxury context, the teams at Mercedes-Benz thank Virgil Abloh for the inspiration to explore each day in the power of cross-industry dialogue - for a better and more open-minded future.
