Flashy, fast, beautiful and rare: Exotic JDM types in the Toyota Collection!

The “JDM” models (“Japanese Domestic Market”) convey joy in automotive specialties and Japanese lifestyle as well as enthusiasm for manga or Fast and Furious. At Toyota alone there are around 80 JDM model series with over 1.000 iconic types that fulfill the unusual wishes of Japanese customers. The Toyota Collection (Toyota Allee 2, 50858 Cologne) is celebrating this world of Far Eastern driving culture on Saturday, September 3, from 10 a.m. to 14 p.m. with a JDM theme day. Admission to the public opening in Germany's largest Toyota collection is free, as is the parking lot, where the JDM community wants to meet many models that are unknown in this country.

JDM types in the Toyota Collection

Get to know the plush comfort of the Toyota Century, as used by the Japanese imperial family as a chauffeured limousine? There is an opportunity to do so on JDM Day, because entry is permitted to almost all 75 exhibits in the Toyota Collection exhibition hall. Japanese buyers are traditionally adventurous when trying out new technologies, as evidenced by various Toyotas in the collection that have been specially developed for the Land of the Rising Sun. A bright green small Sera Coupé with an ingenious butterfly door concept, which even inspired Gordon Murray, chief designer of the McLaren F1990, in the construction of this hypercar in the 1s, is impressive. In contrast, the first Japanese supercar, the Toyota 2000GT, became a global sports car icon in the James Bond film "You Only Live Twice" as Bond girl Aki's car. Today, two examples of this high-tech sports car, built in only 1967 units from 351, can be discovered in the Toyota Collection.

Quite a few visionary technologies or clever body concepts initially convinced Japanese customers before they found their way into Toyota models for Europe: The Toyota FCHV with fuel cell went into a leasing program on the home market 20 years ago, and the Toyota Soarer surprised people in 1985 with a screen and on-board computer. All-wheel drive is also found in Japan in a variety that is unique in the world, because there is the largest 4×4 vehicle portfolio. Typical JDM are the four-wheel drive models Toyota Tacoma, Tundra, Mega Cruiser, Harrier, Vanguard or Rush. The tiny house way of life is now also popular in Europe, but has been part of everyday life for the Japanese for decades. The mobile space marvels with one-box body architecture in the 3,39 meter miniature format for Nippon's megacities include the Toyota Pixo Joy, Mega, Space and Epoch. The same applies to the somewhat larger cubic crossover à la Toyota bB, while vans such as the Vellfire offer space in maxi format - both models are attractions at JDM Day in the Toyota Collection.

many more rarities planned

The JDM community wants to bring many other rarities to their meeting, including a Toyota Chaser, a Mark X and of course the extreme athletes from the tuning and drifting scene. After all, JDM racers are not only a global cult through successes on racetracks, but also through manga, console games and cinema blockbusters. A hype that got going at the latest in 1983, when the lightweight production sports coupés Toyota Levin and Trueno Sprinter (AE86) with rear-wheel drive showed their drift potential and the Corolla Coupé GT (AE86) made its debut in Germany. Legendary kings of drift challenges and always affordable iconic driving fun guarantors, whose tradition is continued today by the new sports coupe Toyota GR86. This adrenaline-packed sports show can be experienced up close at the JDM theme day.

With so many experiences, there is always hunger and thirst, which is why a food truck offers quick snacks. Literature, spare parts, model cars and fan articles, on the other hand, are offered by the specialists at Toyota Classic Parts. Petrol heads who secured one of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Europe GmbH (TGR-E) limited edition motorsport museum tickets can take part in a guided tour of other fast and winning Toyota racers and long-secret prototypes. The next free tickets to this motorsport treasure trove will be awarded at the following Toyota Collection Public Opening, which will take place on the first Saturday in October and will feature the Toyota RAV4.
