After several teasers In the last few days and weeks, the brand new Toyota GR Corolla has finally been presented. A hot hatch with a blatant look and plenty of power from three cylinders. It is based on the well-known GA-C platform frame reinforcements at the GR Factory at the Toyota Motomachi Plant. This impressively expands Toyota's steadily growing range of sports cars. The compact athlete is for the time being but only intended for customers on the other side of the Atlantic (i.e. in the USA). Too bad, but understandable. After all, the GR Yaris doesn't exist there. Let's start with the heart under the hood. The GR Corolla is fueled by the small, yet extremely powerful, G16E-GTS turbocharged direct injection three-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1,6 liters. The engine delivers impressive 300 PS & 370 Nm torque on all four wheels of the 1.474 kg light Japanese. And if you're wondering how you know the G16E-GTS designation, that's the engine from the GR Yaris. But there it “only” delivers 261 hp.
Three-cylinder with 300 hp
Incidentally, according to the Japanese, the engine has been specially developed for rapid acceleration out of corners. It reaches its maximum torque between 3.000 and 5.500 rpm and maximum power is available at 6.500 rpm. Although Toyota has not yet specified any driving performance with the world premiere, we expect approx. 5,5 seconds on country roads and a top speed of electronically limited 250 km/h. And already we know that in the GR Corolla a Six-speed manual is built in that power to those already mentioned GR Four all-wheel drive sends. The all-wheel drive system developed by Toyota makes it possible to determine the power distribution yourself. This means that 60-40, 50-50 and 30-70 can be individually adjusted between the front and rear axles.
many optical details on the GR
All around there were aerodynamic spoilage and extensions and a rather quirky component is the Exhaust System. A "triple exhaust system" is installed, which in our opinion looks quite modest, but supposedly has the practical benefit of significantly less back pressure and thus enables maximum power development. We can already predict that aftermarket manufacturers will adopt a classic right/left system (or exclusively central) in combination with another diffuser. You can currently buy the GR Corolla in two variants as "Core' and as so-called 'circuit edition". The Core will be available in White, Black, and Supersonic Red colors, with color-matched roof and rear spoiler, GR-Four side skirts, and fender flares. the circuit edition is against it limited model for the year 2023. It should be available to order in "White", "Supersonic Red" and "Heavy Metal" and one more on the core details Carbon fiber roof, a ventilated and arched bonnet and another rear spoiler obtained.
the cabin also has a sporty design
For the inner space is donated to the Circuit Edition covered with suede Sports Seats including red Accents and an exclusive one shift knob with Akio Toyoda signature. The core, on the other hand, is "only" with fabric sports seats equipped with GR logo. However, a new Toyota multimedia system with touchscreen is installed in both equipment lines and the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system should also be part of the standard equipment. With regard to prices, Toyota will make statements later this year. Understandably, however, in US dollars, because as already mentioned, it is for Europe for the time being no launch planned.
