2024 YAMAHA XSR900 GP: Looking back at the era of motorcycle racing!

Reading time 3 Min.

The YAMAHA XSR900 GP is a tribute to the golden times of motorcycle racing in the 80s and 90s. The era saw legends like Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey and Mick Doohan battling not just their competitors but also the demanding ones Two-stroke engines. The times were characterized by the dominance of the cigarette industry in motorsport, with every race potentially being the last. Visually speaking, the '80s marked a transition from the curved bodies of the '70s to the more angular, "boxy" design that would set the trend for production bikes in the following years.

The design change is also in the XSR900 GP clearly visible. The fairing of the bike is heavily influenced by the YZR Grand Prix motorcycles of the 80s and at the same time reminds of the FZR and TZR series sports machines the late 1980s to early 90s. And another feature of the XSR900 GP is the change from the round LED headlight of the XSR900 to the more compact one LED module, which is inconspicuously located in the front panel and is still intended to provide fabulous illumination. It stays under the sheet metal 890cc CP3 engine unchanged, with performance and gear ratios that match those of the XSR900 are identical.

Painted in Yamaha Grand Prix colors

But, the front fairing structure of the XSR900 GP brings advantages in the acceleration and the top speed. The integrated ones cooling channels on the side walls maximize the cooling performance of the engine. In keeping with the nostalgic character, the XSR900 GP is painted in one of the most famous Yamaha Grand Prix colors, a typically traditional look. It is inspired by the motorcycles with which greats like Wayne Rainey won several 1980cc Grand Prix World Championships in the 90s and early 500s. The silver chassis and the wing in Deltabox style complete the design and highlight the characteristic Deltabox frame.
