Dirk Oehlerking and his art of customizing: BMW R 18 The Crown!

Dirk Oehlerking and his customizing workshop Kingston Custom are known for creating extraordinary masterpieces. With his latest creation, the BMW R 18 Spirit of Passion, he recently made a clear statement in the customizing scene. This motorcycle creation, which impresses with its aerodynamic shape, is simply spectacular. Now he's going one step further: With the R 18 The Crown, Oehlerking takes us on a journey that leads deeper into the essence of his previous works. For three decades, the passionate and creative motorcycle builder has been living out his preference for individual and unusual motorcycles in the Ruhr area. With his love of industrial culture and proximity to industry and crafts, coupled with an extensive network and fascinating photo motifs, he succeeds in creating breathtaking creations.

BMW R 18 The Crown

In recognition of the centenary of BMW Motorrad, with the R 18 The Crown Oehlerking has developed a motorcycle around the Big Boxer that impresses in every respect. “I started with a brand new BMW R18 that I completely dismantled. My favorite tools are rigid foam and cardboard, which I use to create the shapes, lines, and design. The goal was to combine power, elegance and speed in an innovative design,” says Oehlerking about his creative approach. Significant technical adjustments had to be made to implement the design. This included, among other things, the construction of a completely new front wheel suspension with a double-sided swingarm and a central spring strut. The hand-built 8-litre fuel tank and body panels are machined from 2mm aluminum sheet that has been carefully cut, bent and hammered.

Although the engine and rear suspension were kept in their original condition, the two stainless steel exhaust manifolds were again entirely handcrafted. The R 18 The Crown is an impressive overall concept that seamlessly integrates many standard parts such as headlights, instruments, switch units and footrests. The motorcycle is rounded off by matching clutch and handbrake fittings from Magura, a rear wheel fender with brackets from Wunderkind and a saddle handcrafted from 2 mm thick aluminum sheet, which is covered with real leather. As a final highlight, Oehlerking gave the R 18 The Crown a coat of champagne platinum with mother-of-pearl, complemented by the BMW brand emblem, which is crowned by a small crown. The premiere of the BMW R 18 The Crown will take place from July 7th to 9th, 2023 as part of the BMW Motorrad Days in Berlin, to coincide with the centenary of BMW Motorrad.

About Thomas Wachsmuth

Thomas Wachsmuth - He has been an integral part of tuningblog.eu since 2013. His passion for cars is so intense that he invests every available penny in them. While he dreams of a BMW E31 850CSI and a Hennessey 6x6 Ford F-150, he currently drives a rather inconspicuous BMW 540i (G31/LCI). His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas
