Continental is also supplying a new version of the CrossContact Extreme E for the third season of the all-electric Extreme E racing series, which starts on March 11 and 12 with the Desert X Prix in Neom, Saudi Arabia. When developing the new model, the Continental tire engineers have placed the focus on an even higher proportion of sustainable materials. Overall, the new CrossContact Extreme E now consists of around 43% recycled and renewable raw materials. Among other things, silica is used here, which was obtained from the ash of rice husks, a residue from agriculture. In addition to recycled steel and soot, Continental also uses polyester yarn made from recycled PET plastic bottles. In addition to the increased use of new sustainable solutions, the tire manufacturer was able to reduce the total weight of the CrossContact Extreme E tire by two kilograms. This leads to emission savings during transport.

The third generation of the new CrossContact Extreme E uses the ContiRe.Tex technology developed by Continental. It uses polyester yarn that is obtained without any intermediate chemical steps from used PET bottles that are not otherwise recycled. The bottles used for the technology come exclusively from regions without a closed recycling loop. Polyester made from around 30 recycled PET bottles is in each of the 60 tires that Continental is supplying to each of the ten Extreme E teams for the third season. The tire manufacturer currently offers motorists three series models in five dimensions each with polyester made from recycled PET bottles: the PremiumContact 6, the EcoContact 6 and the AllSeasonContact all-season tyre.

Sustainable plant-based fillers

In addition to rubber, fillers such as silica are essential for tire construction. Silica, for example, helps to significantly optimize tire properties such as grip, rolling resistance and mileage. In the CrossContact Extreme E, rice husks are the starting material for sustainably produced silica. Rice husks are a by-product of rice production and cannot be used as food or animal feed. Derived from the ash of rice husks, silica is more energy-efficient to produce than traditional materials like quartz sand.

The third generation of the CrossContact Extreme E will be used in all five races of the 2023 season and is optimized for top performance in all climate zones and on all surface conditions. “With the tire we have placed an even stronger focus on the use of sustainable and recyclable materials and are certain that we are well prepared for the challenges of the 2023 season. In addition, we were able to further optimize the handling performance and thus improve the handling. With its performance and robustness, the tire will withstand all Extreme E requirements,” says Nels von Schnakenburg, Technical Manager Extreme E at Continental. The size, diameter and width of the tire have remained unchanged. This is 37 x 12.50 R17 - i.e. 37 inch diameter, 12.5 inch width and 17 inch rim.

The technology company is the founding partner and exclusive tire supplier of the off-road racing series, which will be held for the first time in 2021. It brings motorsport with electrically powered vehicles to the most remote corners of the earth to make motorsport fans aware of the effects of climate change. The third season of Extreme E kicks off on March 11th and 12th in Saudi Arabia. In Europe, the all-electric racing series will be broadcast by various TV stations and broadcasters.

Continental's tire division follows a holistic approach to sustainability across all phases of a tire's value chain. Continental has set itself the goal of becoming the most progressive tire company in terms of environmental and social responsibility. For Continental, solutions for the circular economy are an important means of achieving its ambitious goal of CO2-Achieve neutrality in their supply chain by 2050 at the latest.
