The fascination of drive-in cinemas - what makes the experience special?

If you want to experience cinema in a different way, a visit to the drive-in cinema is certainly great fun. But what exactly is the fascination with drive-in cinemas? First of all, you can enjoy your privacy in the drive-in cinema. You can bring your own snacks and watch the film of your choice in a relaxed and comfortable manner from your own living room on wheels, without having to forego the cinema flair. The drive-in cinema is also a good choice for families, because no matter whether you have babies or small children, you don't have to worry that your own attachment could disturb the other cinema-goers. You can chat, fool around or explain scenes from the film to the children.

The classic clientele for the drive-in cinema are couples in love. These are traditionally in the last row, which is why they are also called "Love Lane" and can enjoy their togetherness undisturbed. The image of a couple in love in a Cadillac parked in front of a brightly lit screen, framed by the dark blue night sky, is probably what everyone has in mind when they think of the drive-in cinema. No wonder, since the drive-in cinema also comes from the USA and created a trend there in the 50s and 60s.

The history of the drive-in cinema

The origin of the drive-in theater is credited to a man named Richard Hollingshead Jr. Working as a sales manager for Whiz Auto Products in the 1930s, he came up with the idea of using a white bed sheet tied to the garage door and a film projector to create an open-air cinema show. The then 33-year-old from Pennsauken, New Jersey, patented the idea and a little later opened the first drive-in cinema under the name "Drive-In Theater" and the addition "The world's first drive-in cinema - see and hear films". 335 people were able to watch a film there together. A whitewashed wall served as a screen. The premiere was sold out, the British comedy "Wives Beware" was shown.

During the first summer, staff collected Hollingshead's license plates from forty-three different states. Hollingshead solved initial problems with the sound using small boxes at the stands before the sound output could be further improved via a frequency on the radio. By 1942 there were 95 drive-in theaters in the United States, but the heyday of drive-in theaters was to be in the '50s and '60s. In 1958 around 5.000 drive-in cinemas were open in the USA, the largest in Detroit and in Lufkin, Texas, offering space for 3.000 cars. Drive-in cinemas had a firm place in youth culture in the USA and were also repeatedly used as locations for film plots.

Technology

In almost all modern drive-in cinemas, the sound is provided via a specific frequency of the car radio. The organizer will inform you beforehand which frequency is to be set. From the infotainment system of your SEAT you can access the manual setting of the frequency range via "Home" and the radio and frequency icon. So you can enjoy the film of your choice in the best sound quality from the speakers in your car. You can adjust the volume individually.

Drive-in cinemas in Germany

In Germany, the drive-in cinema in Gravenbruch, Hesse, which opened in 1960, is the first of its kind in this country and in Europe at all. Many US soldiers were stationed in the area, who turned out to be loyal customers. A second drive-in cinema followed in Berlin-Siemensstadt in 1966. The first drive-in cinema opened in Hamburg in 1976 and survived until 2003. Anyone who wanted to go to the drive-in cinema in the former GDR could go to Zempow (Wittstock/Dosse in Brandenburg) from 1977. In all of Germany there were probably never more than 40 drive-in cinemas. Today the number of permanent drive-in cinemas is estimated at 12 – numerous event and pop-up drive-in cinemas are added seasonally. There are now mobile and inflatable cinema screens, so-called air screens, which can be rented for a drive-in cinema session. We have selected five beautiful drive-in cinemas from all over Germany for all open-air cineastes, nostalgics and car fans.
