Jump starting an electric car - is that possible?

It has probably happened to you too: You have to make your way to work on a cold winter morning, but the car strikes. In many cases the battery is to blame. With combustion engines there is the possibility of bridging the battery in an emergency. But what about electric cars? Can another e-car driver or a combustion engine give jump start? The reassuring answer is JA. Here's how it works. Combustion engines are equipped with a 12-volt battery, which not only ensures that electrical components such as headlights, electric windows or the infotainment system work, but also powers the starter. Although it regenerates while driving, it often happens that it empties itself, which is why the car no longer starts. With the support of another vehicle, this battery can be bridged and the vehicle can be made to run. And that works even with an electric car, because in addition to the high-voltage battery for operating the motor, it also has one 12 volt battery for starting, whose function is virtually identical to the battery in the combustion engine. It starts the high-voltage system and switches on the battery for the drive. However, it can become empty, for example if the interior lighting has been switched on all night. And a fully charged high-voltage battery does not solve this problem, because the 12-volt battery only recharges while driving.

The starter battery of the e-car is rather small, so they only use vehicles with a smaller or similarly large battery capacity to avoid overloading the battery.

As with the combustion engine, the 12-volt battery from the e-car can be used with the help of another e-car or a combustion engine with the usual cables bridged will. However, you should make sure that all unnecessary electrical functions that draw energy from the 12-volt battery are switched off and that the electric car is "switched on". Then clamp the ends of the red cable to the positive poles of the donor battery and to the dead battery and the end of the black cable to the negative pole of the donor car and the other end to the battery in the electric car that was left behind. Start the donor vehicle and after a few minutes try to start your car. If the cockpit shows you that it is ready to start, the bridging was successful. Before you start the drive, stay connected to the donor car for a few more minutes. You can then gradually switch on the required functions and start your journey. Bridging Gadgets: Some manufacturers offer gadgets that can make bridging easier. For example, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is equipped with an adapter for Schuko plugs that other electric cars can use to draw energy. Boosters can also be used, which, like a power bank for a mobile phone, do not require a second vehicle.
