Car tuning and car insurance

If you love your car, you often enjoy doing it, be it to improve performance or to get the best out of the model. What is often forgotten here: The motor vehicle insurance company must also know when significant changes are made to the vehicle. So, if you tune your car, you often have to pimp the insurance company so that the two work well together as partners.

Every year in November it is possible to compare the premium levels of car insurance and thus find the cheapest provider. A car tariff comparison is always worthwhile even if car tuning is imminent. Because the changes to the vehicle must also be reported to the insurance company. This in turn adjusts the contributions accordingly - and that can be expensive. Another option: the insurance company does not accept the tuned car in the first place.

The insurance companies have to follow some basic rules in dealing with the Chip Tuning and other auto tuning agreed. It is often the case that approved and registered tuning parts are also insured up to a value of 5.000 euros. Comprehensive insurance is less important for regular conversions, since tuning does not affect the replacement value in the event of damage. Basically, tuning measures should always be communicated to the car insurer in order to avoid problems with claims settlement or recourse claims.

New hairstyle with consequences

Changes to the body, vehicle or engine can in many cases have consequences that require action. So there are some tuning measures that require a new operating license. In order for TÜV approval to be possible at all, the new parts must have certain seals:

  • Components with EC or ECE approval can usually also be made without acceptance of changes.
  • Teilegutachten (TGA)
  • General operating license for vehicle parts (ABE)
  • general type approvals (ABG)

Car fans sometimes spend a lot of money on tuning. That is why it pays to be on the safe side before tuning and to only install approved components. Also important: The approvals and seals for the installed parts should always be carried in the vehicle.

Auto-tuning is also a professional thing, which also provides security for insurance and TÜV. If you want to lend a hand yourself, you should inform yourself thoroughly, for example at Tune it! Safe !, a campaign by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.
