Landshut. The BMW Group plant in Landshut has once again received an innovation award for its future-proof and sustainable production processes, this time from the AVK - Industrievereinigung Reinkte Kunststoffe eV It annually awards innovations in the field of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) / composites. The CFRP development at the BMW Group plant in Landshut was awarded first place in the “Processes” category.
Excellent process: "In-Mold Wrapping".
The surfaces of fiber composite components for exterior applications - such as roofs, bonnets or tailgates - have to be coated. The paint preparation and painting required for this cause CO2-Emissions during production. The "In-Mold Wrapping" (IMW) process, which was awarded the AVK Innovation Prize 2021, is particularly sustainable and reduces these costs.
"The approach that has been implemented consists in providing the component with a film during the shaping pressing process, which can replace the paint in the future, and is suitable for various duromer pressing processes," explains the responsible project manager, Dr. Thomas Henke. “Our new process is characterized by the fact that it can be automated without affecting the cycle time. We use foils that can be reshaped with vacuum support without additional, energy-intensive heating steps. ”The process is very resource-saving: The CO savings2-Emissions compared to conventional painting of CFRP components is up to 93 percent.
Industry award for the third time in a row
With the AVK Innovation Prize 2021, the BMW Group plant in Landshut has received prestigious industry awards for the third time in a row: in September, the plant in Landshut received multiple points at the 20th "SPE Automotive Award" from the International Society for Plastics Technology - and it was has received both the “Grand Award” and an “Innovation Award”. Before that, the CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) production area of the plant had already received the “JEC Europe Innovation Award”.
