ALPINA brand becomes part of the BMW Group!

Press release Alpine: The Bovensiepen family is taking their 57-year partnership with BMW into a new era. ALPINA now becomes a brand of the BMW Group. From 2026, BMW will create even more automotive diversity in the luxury sector, in which ALPINA has also been established for many years. Until the end of 2025, the Bovensiepen family company with its engineering expertise will continue to develop, manufacture and sell the exclusive BMW ALPINA automobiles according to the existing cooperation model. “We will continue to introduce wonderful and efficient vehicles in the years to come. The order intake is at a high level and there are still a few new starts to come,” explains Andreas Bovensiepen, Managing Director of ALPINA Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH + Co. KG. “The desirability of the ALPINA brand and our company is of course enormous. We made a conscious decision not to sell ALPINA to just any manufacturer, because BMW and ALPINA have been working together in a spirit of trust for decades. For this reason, it is strategically the right decision that the ALPINA brand will be managed by the BMW Group in the future.” The completion of the transaction of the trademark rights is still subject to various conditions precedent, in particular subject to approval by the responsible antitrust authorities.

This strategic realignment comes from a strong position to react to the increasing dynamics of the tightening legal framework. 2021 was the most successful year for ALPINA Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH + Co. KG with more than 2.000 BMW ALPINA automobiles delivered. At the same time, the automotive industry is undergoing the greatest change in history. Due to the politically decreed transformation towards electromobility and the increasing regulations worldwide - in particular the exhaust gas legislation, software protection and specifications for driver assistance and monitoring systems - the requirements and risks are also increasing significantly for small series manufacturers. Against this background, the long-term cooperation agreement, which was last extended by five more years at the end of 2020, expires on December 31.12.2025, XNUMX.

The Bovensiepen family company is now setting the course for the future by passing on the ALPINA brand. “We will continue our father's life's work and invest in the well-known name BOVENSIEPEN. With our expertise and our high quality standards, we will continue to bring other convincing mobile offers onto the market in the future," says Florian Bovensiepen, Managing Director of ALPINA Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH + Co. KG: "Our family, our employees will continue to work for Top -Quality and engineering skill in automotive technology. The production area is gradually being converted into a service area. This strategic reorientation will secure the Buchloe site in the long term.”

The know-how built up over decades and the engineering expertise of the family company will be available to other automobile manufacturers in addition to the BMW Group in the future. Both in the field of classic combustion technology and increasingly in electromobility. The close connection between ALPINA Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH + Co. KG, the ALPINA brand and the BMW Group continues. The cooperation in aftersales will continue unchanged and in the long term. The long-term availability of original ALPINA spare parts, ALPINA accessories and high-quality services is guaranteed at the Buchloe site.

In particular, the long-established company would now like to devote more attention to its great history and in future also offer restorations for ALPINA young and oldtimers. New editions of classic parts and classic accessories are planned for this. Entry into the trade with younger and older BMW ALPINA models is also planned. The wine trade operated by the Bovensiepen family under the name ALPINA is not affected by the transfer and will continue to be run in the usual form by ALPINA Wein GmbH + Co. KG. The acquisition of the trademark rights by BMW and the resulting discontinuation of the current ALPINA vehicle range at the end of 2025 will have an impact on the existing jobs at the Buchloe site. For the time being, however, the business will continue unchanged, because the order situation is very good and new vehicle launches are still to come.

BMW will support ALPINA in the coming years in connection with the necessary adjustment of the workplaces at the Buchloe site. By the end of 2025, BMW will, in consultation with ALPINA, offer some ALPINA employees who will not be able to continue working at the Buchloe site a new job at the BMW Group and will also help to find new jobs with suppliers or development partners. It was agreed not to disclose any financial details. Company shares were not sold.

Press release BMW:  The BMW Group is growing - the ALPINA brand becomes part of the company. The BMW Group secures the rights to the ALPINA brand and creates even more automotive diversity in its own luxury segment. BMW AG and ALPINA Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH + Co. KG have agreed on this. This secures the long-term future of the ALPINA brand and Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH & Co. KG. The completion of the transaction is still subject to various conditions precedent, in particular subject to approval by the responsible antitrust authorities. The long-term cooperation agreement, which was last extended by another five years at the end of 2020, expires on December 31.12.2025, XNUMX. It was agreed not to disclose any financial details. Company shares are not acquired. For more than half a century, BMW and the small series manufacturer from Buchloe, just outside Munich, have worked closely and trustingly together at the highest level. A new chapter is now beginning as a result of the transformation in the automotive industry.

“The automotive industry is in the midst of a profound transformation towards sustainable mobility. Existing business models must be regularly questioned. For more than half a century, Buchloe has impressively demonstrated how the highest quality automotive culture can be realized on four wheels with great attention to detail. This passion for fascinating cars also drives the BMW Group. Therefore, we are now opening a new chapter in our long-standing partnership. By acquiring the trademark rights, we will shape the long-term existence of this traditional brand in a future-oriented manner. We are very pleased to welcome the ALPINA brand to the BMW family,” says Pieter Nota, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for customers, brands and sales.

Due to the transformation towards electromobility and increasing regulations worldwide - in particular emissions legislation, software protection and specifications for driver assistance and monitoring systems - the risks are also increasing significantly for small series manufacturers. The management of ALPINA Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH + Co. KG countered this with the strategic reorientation in order to secure the Buchloe location in the long term. Andreas Bovensiepen, Managing Director of ALPINA Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH + Co. KG, explains: "We recognized the challenges in the automotive industry in good time and are now setting the right course for ALPINA and also for our family company BOVENSIEPEN. Now a new chapter begins. The desirability of the ALPINA brand and our company is of course enormous. We made a conscious decision not to sell ALPINA to just any manufacturer because BMW and ALPINA have been working together in a spirit of trust for decades. For this reason, it is strategically the right decision that the ALPINA brand will be managed by the BMW Group in the future.”

The cooperation will be continued - but in a different form: until the end of 2025, the Bovensiepen family company will continue to develop, manufacture and sell the BMW ALPINA vehicles from the existing cooperation with its engineering expertise. The BMW automobiles that serve as the basis are extensively modified by ALPINA. This applies to the engine and transmission, the chassis, the aerodynamics and the interior. BMW ALPINA vehicles are prefabricated on the BMW assembly lines, the final assembly of the vehicles takes place in the factory in Buchloe. The individualized interiors are also manufactured there according to customer requirements. The service, the spare parts and accessories business for the existing and historic BMW ALPINA vehicle portfolio are guaranteed in the long term at the Buchloe location. The cooperation in aftersales will continue unchanged. In addition, as part of a strategic cooperation between the two companies, the existing development service business for BMW in Buchloe will be further expanded. The wine business included in the family business continues unchanged.

“BMW and ALPINA – that fits perfectly! The ALPINA brand, which has matured in close association with BMW for over 50 years, offers everything that makes the heart of an automotive gourmet around the world beat faster. It masters the balancing act between cultivated sportiness, luxury and exclusivity. We are therefore happy to take over the brand rights to ALPINA and use them for a future BMW offer," says Jens Thiemer, Senior Vice President Customer and Brand BMW. 2021 was the most successful year in the company history of ALPINA Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH + Co. KG. The family business will proactively reposition itself from a position of strength to respond to regulatory challenges and technological change in the industry. This secures the Buchloe site in the long term.

“We will continue our father's life's work and invest in the well-known name BOVENSIEPEN. With our expertise and our high quality standards, we will bring other convincing mobile offers to the market in the future," explains Managing Director Florian Bovensiepen: "Without our creative, capable and loyal employees, we would not have been able to write this success story at ALPINA. We use the power of our house, our team and our families to carry out this reorientation at the right time. At the same time, together with the BMW Group, we are committed to our social responsibility towards our workforce and will do our best to cushion any possible impact of this realignment.”

The sale of the trademark rights to BMW and the associated discontinuation of the current ALPINA vehicle range at the end of 2025 has an impact on the existing jobs at the Buchloe site. By the end of 2025, BMW will, in consultation with ALPINA, offer some ALPINA employees who will not be able to continue working at the Buchloe site a new job at the BMW Group and will also help to find new jobs with suppliers or development partners.
