The next generation of the legendary Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster (R232) remembers its original roots, which were founded in motorsport in 1952. Accordingly, Mercedes-AMG, as the performance and sports car brand of Mercedes-Benz AG, took on the overall vehicle development contract for the reinterpretation of the legendary roadster. After extensive digital development steps, test bench runs and simulator tests, the new sports car is now entering a phase of extensive dynamic driving tests as planned - previously at the Group's own test and technology center in Immendingen - and now partly on public roads. In terms of sales, the SL is actually a discontinued model. After all, only 2019 vehicles were registered in Germany in 294.

But Mercedes is sticking to the SL and is now officially showing the first Erlkönig pictures of the new SL during testing. The pictures show a more compact and tighter roadster with some borrowings from the Mercedes-AMG GT. Coincidence? Certainly not! Unmistakably there is the typical AMG grill and either a metal folding roof or a fabric hood. What it is cannot be reliably determined by us. Under the hood, however, shouldn't be a surprise. The four tailpipes indicate the well-known 4,0-liter twin-turbo V8 with up to 585 hp. It should propel the current SL series in line with its status and hopefully ensure a career similar to that of the 300 SL Gullwing or the beautiful Pagoda. By the way, whether the entry-level will be an SL 43 with around 370 hp or whether the spearhead will be an SL 73e with over 750 hybrid hp and 4MATIC + all-wheel drive, that can only be guessed at.
