Happy Birthday! Mercedes E 50 AMG (W 210) turns 25!

This sedan is a self-confident statement from Mercedes-Benz for sportiness in the upper middle class: The Mercedes-Benz E 50 AMG was exhibited in autumn 1995 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main (September 14 to 24, 1995 ) Premiere. 255 years ago, the 347 kW (25 PS) high-performance automobile made clear the philosophy of single-mindedly establishing AMG as a sports car and performance brand. The response from experts is very positive: The “Automobil Revue” from Switzerland attests in issue 52/1996 the E 50 AMG “Exclusivity and a highly sporty temperament without discussion". In issue 12/1996, the specialist magazine "mot" raves about the M 8 V119 engine with a displacement of 4.973 cubic centimeters that has been refined by AMG:

"The machine balances the E-Class to 6,0 km / h in 100 seconds and reproduces all the timbres of a powerful V8 song in high culture."Finally, in the July 1996 issue of the North American magazine" Road & Track ", the link to the legendary Mercedes-Benz 500 E, which is also powered by a 5-liter version of the M 119:"If you press the accelerator pedal down (it is adjusted for dignified starts, not tossed heads), the spirit of the 500 E emerges and turns the four-door sedan into a rocket."

Automobiles from Affalterbach

The E 50 AMG is being built in Affalterbach on the basis of the likewise powerful Mercedes-Benz E 420. The new vehicle is a star in this still young history of high-performance automobiles jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and AMG. Before that, from 1993 there was the C 36 AMG in the C-Class of the 202 series as well as the E 124 AMG sedan in the 60 series and the E 36 AMG as a coupé and T-model. The design of the E 210 AMG makes its special position among the business sedans of the 50 series clear: the modified front apron not only reduces the front axle lift, but also takes up the round lights in the four-eye face of the 210 series with the fog lights .

Sports exhaust system and body kit

The side skirts and the modified rear apron with integrated double pipe exhaust also contribute to the optimized aerodynamics. The engineers subject the engine to a performance upgrade. These include larger combustion chambers, expanded intake ports with corresponding valves, new springs for intake and exhaust valves, revised intake and exhaust camshafts and the coordination of the electronic engine management by AMG and Bosch. The engine output increases while at the same time the emission limit values that will apply in the European Community from 1996 are more than halved.

Exhaust system with components from the S-Class

AMG is also dedicated to the twin-pipe exhaust system, which is optimized with components from the S-Class and has a rear silencer with tailpipes in AMG design. The short rear axle ratio of i = 3,06 underlines the sporty character of the E 50 AMG and ensures excellent acceleration of the top model in the E-Class. It sprints from zero to 100 km / h in 6,2 seconds. Shifting is done by a five-speed automatic transmission with electronic control. It is almost a third lighter than the four-speed automatic in the E 500 of the 124 series and ensures smooth gear changes by reducing the ignition before changing gear.

Technically and aesthetically high level

Further features of the E 50 AMG are the standard ASR traction control system, the AMG sports suspension with harder shock absorbers and reinforced stabilizers as well as the braking system specially developed for the high-performance vehicle. This consists of two-piston floating caliper brakes with 334 millimeter large, internally ventilated special discs at the front and fixed caliper brakes from the braking system of the SL 600 of the 129 series with 300 millimeter brake discs at the rear. The interior corresponds to the high technical level with a two-tone leather interior (including steering wheel and gear lever) as well as trim parts in black bird's eye maple. The dial of the speedometer with AMG logo, scaled up to 280 km / h, clearly shows the performance potential of the E 50 AMG, but the vehicle is actually electronically limited to 250 km / h. After a year and a half of production and 2.960 vehicles produced, the E 50 AMG was replaced by the E 1997 AMG (55 kW / 260 hp) as the new top model in the 354 series in autumn 210.
