Indulging in alcohol in the name of science is usually rare. However, dozens of test subjects were allowed to do this recently and deal with a variety of levels of drunkenness with one E-Scooter move through a course. All driving errors of the test subjects were recorded by means of a camera. Since the participants in the experiment were equipped with protective clothing and helmets, there were no injuries in sporadic falls. However, it was found that already one moderate alcohol consumption led to the fact that the e-scooter drivers lost half of the actual mileage. This is the result of the forensic scientists in the study, which was presented on Friday. In the experiment, the researchers were based on a study that had already been carried out on cycling under the influence of alcohol. Accordingly, the test persons first drove through the course on e-scooters without the influence of alcohol and then with the corresponding alcohol level. There were already restrictions on mileage between 0,3 and 0,7 per mil. It was found that the mileage was around half was reducedif the blood alcohol level is between 0,3 and 0,7. As the alcohol level rises, the mileage continued to decrease. In order to be able to exclude the effects of fatigue, the course was run through by a sober control group at the same time intervals.
The experiment also showed that with an alcohol value of 1,3 per mille the mileage was reduced to around 25 percent on average. At a value of 1,5 per mille, it even fell to around 10 percent. In order to also take the influence of the weather into account, the tests were carried out on four different days in both rain and drought. Professor Hartung said that e-scooters quickly become relatively unsteady. One commits from a per mille value of 0,3 criminal act. Without realizing it, many would play with their driver's license. Minors who use an e-scooter while under the influence of alcohol can also risk an entry. This can lead to difficulties later if you want to get your driver's license.
There are calls for an alcohol ban!
The Association against alcohol and drugs in road traffic, who supported the study, demanded in view of the results that the same standards, so a strict alcohol ban should apply, as with novice drivers. The study was carried out in collaboration with the forensic medicine institutes in Munich and Düsseldorf. A study that has already been carried out by the Institute for Transport Research and the German Aerospace Center showed that for every million kilometers traveled, the number of people injured with an e-scooter is four times higher than when riding a bike and six times higher than in comparison to pedestrians. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the influence of alcohol was the most common among e-scooters in 2020, at 18,3 percent Cause of accident. In contrast, excessive alcohol consumption was the cause of only 7,1 percent of all accidents among cyclists. The comparison is difficult, however, since higher alcohol limits apply to cyclists. The alcohol limits for e-scooter drivers are currently the same as the alcohol limits for drivers.
