How to short circuit a car!

These step-by-step tips will help you find a car to short circuit. Info: It's obviously not legal to hot-wire a car without first the owner's permission to have received or to be the owner. But about an old one Barn find, whose ownership has been clarified, but whose keys are no longer available, can justify a short circuit. In general, there is a great risk with the project, one electric shock to get. Short-circuiting doesn't always work either. In new vehicles, many components are installed in places that are difficult to access. Many cars also have one breaker. This circuit breaker automatically switches off the engine and you can no longer start it (not even with a key). Hybrid cars or electric cars, on the other hand, can be short-circuited.

1. Method of shorting

  • Here, the hood is opened first.
  • Then look for a red coil of wire. It is usually located at the rear of V8 engines. In a four-cylinder engine, the ignition coil is installed in the middle of the engine; in a six-cylinder, the ignition coil is often on the left-hand side near the middle of the engine.
  • Then look for the square battery (red and black wire).
  • The next step is to pull a separate wire from the positive terminal (not the battery negative terminal) to the positive side of the coil or the red wire, which in turn goes to the coil. Thus, there is power for the dashboard. This is an important criterion for starting the engine.
  • Then look for the starter relay. Often it is on the right side of the fender and next to it is the battery. The starter relay can also be found under the steering wheel on the starter from time to time.
  • Is the gear out and the handbrake on? This is important if a normal manual gearbox is present.
  • Then the steering wheel is unlocked. To do this, place a flat-head screwdriver in the middle of the steering column. The screwdriver is pressed between the steering column and the steering wheel and the locking pin can then be pushed away from the steering wheel. You can use a lot of force here and usually don't need to worry. The locking pin does not break off so quickly and no alarm is triggered. The relay can usually be found underneath.
  • Then you see cables. The positive battery terminal and a small cable (on top of the relay). The two poles of the cables must be bridged. This is done with pliers or a screwdriver. You can then start the engine and drive off.

2. Method of shorting

  • First you get into the car, if necessary by force.
  • Any car that has an alarm system will of course trigger it if the vehicle is entered by force if the battery is still fully charged.
  • Then you may have to remove covers and look under the steering wheel. The covers are usually held in place with two Phillips screws or various clamps. These should be removed if necessary.
  • After that, it is checked whether there is a wiring harness connection or a clip that allows access to the ignition and the ignition cables.
  • Find two identical wires, both of which are usually red. You have to lay them bare and then twist them together. One wire connects the car's electrical circuits (main power supply for the ignition switch) and the other is the connection for the vehicle's electrical circuits. When the key is turned, a connection is established between the two and power is supplied for the respective ignition components. If the starter is then turned, the engine can start.
  • It is important to remove about an inch of insulation from the wires. Then twist the cables together tightly and wrap them with insulating tape if possible. They must not come into contact with vehicle components made of metal, otherwise a short circuit could occur.
  • The ignition cable is often brown and some insulation has to be removed here too. Then you touch the two connected red cables with the brown cable.
  • However, the brown cable must not be turned to the red cables, they should only come into contact with each other. Then just keep trying until ignition occurs.
  • Then the engine should run.

3. Method of shorting

  • You need a cordless screwdriver, a flat screwdriver (insulated handle) and a drill (small).
  • At the end of the keyhole is a flap. Place the drill two-thirds of the way down the keyhole and carefully drill into it up to the length of the key. This destroys the spigot in the lock and you can unlock the key switch without a key on or off.
  • It is important to know that each tenon always has two sections and a spring follows it. It is worth drilling more than once and taking out the drill each time. Then the individual pieces of the lock can fall down.
  • You then apply the screwdriver as if you were inserting the key. It doesn't have to be deep, because the spigot has already broken off.
  • You use the screwdriver like the classic key and simply turn it around.
  • Attention: The key switch is destroyed with this method and anyone with a strong fingernail or a screwdriver can steal the car in the future!

Tips:

  • Significant damage is risked when hot-wiring a car.
  • The ignition cable must never be twisted together when the engine is off. Otherwise the ignition system in the car may burn out or the battery may drain.
  • A vehicle with a computer chip in the ignition switch cannot be shorted (because of the ECM)
  • Important: Wear insulated gloves!
  • The engine dies immediately if an ignition cable comes loose while driving and you then have no steering, no brakes and no more drive.
  • All these tips must not be used illegally to steal a car!

The following note is essential: For safety reasons, tuningblog recommends all repair, inspection and maintenance work exclusively to be carried out in a specialist workshop! Although our information is summarized to the best of our knowledge and belief, we cannot assume any liability for the content. All information is therefore "without guarantee".

Of course, that wasn't the end of it!

In this tuningblog category there are guides and instructions for common defects/repairs on the vehicle and for installing accessories/tuning parts. Our articles explain in a simple way common defects and the corresponding repairs, as well as explaining how the first signs of a defect become noticeable. In most cases, we also have initial clues to the repair instructions in our repair instructions approximate The costs of the pending repair are listed. The goal of our subcategory “Auto Repair Guide“ is to create a head start in knowledge for the next visit to the workshop with initial tips. This may save you from tedious troubleshooting and small things can perhaps be done directly on your own. The same applies, of course, to the installation of accessories/tuning parts. Here, too, we would like to help with the implementation with instructions and tips. There are many other posts on this as well. Below is an excerpt of the last and HERE there are all previous instructions:

  1. Shorting out my car recently worked. I was very excited. It was an emergency. I now dare to do a lot of repair work on my car myself. For some tricky problems, I still go to an auto repair shop.
