Weatherproof vehicle cameras for more road safety in winter

In the wet and cold months, road conditions are often extremely dangerous for drivers. Snow, fog and heavy rain can leave residues on the cameras, impair visibility and thus increase the risk of accidents and collisions. Research shows that around 22% of all road accidents are caused by adverse weather conditions. Commercial vehicle drivers feel particularly at risk in a storm. Although the driving recommendations should of course always be observed in extreme weather conditions, professional drivers are under constant pressure to get their goods to their destination on time. Routine inspections of commercial vehicles should be thorough in all weathers - but it is very important to remove any dirt from cameras so that they can provide a clear image when the weather is particularly adverse.

Flap camera protects against dirt

Protecting drivers and other road users in dangerous weather conditions is of course a priority. Advances in vehicle safety technology in recent years can help here. This also includes camera monitor systems that not only eliminate blind spots on the vehicle, but also improve the driver's view even under the toughest operating conditions. "In bad weather, the view through camera monitor systems can suffer“, Commented John Osmant, Managing Director of Brigade Elektronik GmbH. "For example, large vehicles generate suction behind them at high speeds, which draws dust and dirt to the rear of the vehicle. These particles can quickly obscure the lens of a reversing camera so that the driver loses sight of the rear.“Flap cameras, such as Brigade's Elite and Select lines, provide an answer to this problem. They are equipped with an automatic flap closure that protects the camera outside of the operating hours. The flap only opens when the driver shifts into reverse, which keeps the lens clean and increases the life of the camera.

IP protection class up to IP69K

Osmant continues: "Our cameras have excellent resistance under all environmental conditions. They work in temperatures down to -40 ºC and offer IP protection classes up to IP69K - the highest possible classification for protection against water or dust and sand. Even in heavy rain or storm and in the toughest conditions, they remain excellent driving aids and eliminate blind spots, regardless of the weather conditions.“Brigade's flap cameras are also equipped with an integrated heater, which prevents water from collecting on the lens and freezing the flap over - a significant advantage for driver safety in sub-zero temperatures.
