For many it is an absolute "MUST"! The exhaust flaps-Attachment to the tuned car. Thousands of manufacturers and retrofit companies (tuners) offer sports exhaust systems with flap function for almost every car model ex works or from the accessories. But now there seems to be something going on in European legislation that could soon put an end to this fun!

A new regulation in the form of EU regulation 540/2014, on the noise level of motor vehicles, should already be significantly quieter on our roads from July 1, 2016. The new regulation states the following: "All exhaust systems deviating from the series must have the same volume as the standard and factory-installed system"! Theoretically, that would mean that even the sports exhaust systems available ex works (example from: M-Performance Parts, Mercedes AMG, etc.) must not exceed the noise level of the standard system.

By the way, from July next year this level will be between 72 and 75dB depending on the vehicle category. Of course, as with the daytime running lights regulation, current models are excluded for the time being. By the way, by 2024 the EU wants to lower the noise limit even further, to 68 to a maximum of 72 dB, which should then correspond to a BMW I3 or I8.
