Are winter tires allowed to be driven in summer?

The saying “O to O – from Easter to October” is familiar to most car owners. That's the amount of time when most motorists with summer tires on the way. However, there is no legal basis for the expression. In Germany, in contrast to other European countries, there is only one winter tire requirement, which is depends on the weather ("Weather-related winter tires compulsory"). So there is no set datewhen to change tires.

Under these circumstances, winter tires must be used!

As the winter tire requirement depends on the weather, it is the driver's/owner's responsibility to decide whether or not changing tires is appropriate based on the weather. With black ice, snow, ice, frost or slush it is not allowedto be on the road with summer tires. In these cases, the car needs to ensure safety all road users be equipped with winter tires.

What are the consequences of not observing the winter tire obligation?

  • Fine of 60 EUR
  • an additional fine of EUR 20 for obstructing traffic if the car "gets stuck" with summer wheels
  • additional fine of 100 EUR and 1 point in Flensburg for endangering other road users. In this case, the vehicle owner will receive another fine of EUR 75.

In addition, disregarding the obligation to wear winter tires in the event of a traffic accident means that the insurance company may not for the damage comes up. In this case, no costs are covered even with fully comprehensive insurance and you as the car owner have to pay for the damage yourself.

Minimum tread depth of tires in summer & winter!

The ADAC recommends at least 4mm tread depth, although the legally prescribed value is only 1,6 millimeters. Incidentally, a complete replacement of the tires is generally recommended after six years. But now we come to the question from the title. Are winter tires allowed to be driven in summer? Although it is not expressly prohibited, it is not recommended. It has been found several times in various tests that winter tires are not as suitable for driving at high temperatures and summer road conditions as classic summer tires. An example: Winter tires have a significantly longer braking distance in summer conditions.

Of course, that wasn't the end of it.
