If you want to go on holiday by car, you want to do without as little luggage as possible. Especially those who start their well-deserved vacation with a mobile home or caravan usually have enough space to take countless things with them. According to ADAC experts, however, it is important to ensure that the camping vehicle not too cluttered. Because the overload would reduce driving stability, significantly increase the braking distance and cause the vehicle to swerve in curves.
Correct loading of the mobile home - how much luggage is allowed on board?
In the event of an accident, there are problems with the insurance and a traffic stop spoiled with hefty fines immediately guarantees the holiday mood. And if the heavily loaded vehicle poses a significant risk to road safety, the police can even completely forbid further travel. Or the arrangement is made to move the mobile home accordingly on the spot unload. If a vehicle is overloaded, vehicle owners in Germany must expect the following fines according to the ADAC (Mobile homes up to 7,5 t and caravans up to 2 t gross vehicle weight (GVW)).
Overloaded camper? Be prepared for the following fines in Germany:
- from 5% overload: 10 euros fine
- from 10% overload: 30 euros fine
- over 20% overcharge: 95 euros and 1 point in Flensburg as a penalty
- 25% Overcharge: 140 euros and 1 point in Flensburg as a penalty
- 30% Overcharge: 235 euros and 1 point in Flensburg as a penalty
The automobile club warns on its website that the penalties in other European countries can even "be significantly higher“ can, since many countries in terms of overloading not the slightest tolerance demonstrate.
Caravan overloaded? According to ADAC, you can expect these possible fines in Europe:
- Belgium: between 110 & 330 euros (payment is always made in cash for foreign holidaymakers)

- Austria: more than 2 percent, at least 36 euros, maximum fine 5.000 euros
- Luxembourg: 74 euros at 10% overload, then between 251 and 5.000 euros
- Netherlands: min. 130 euros, maximum penalty 850 euros
- France: between 135 & 750 euros
- Spain: 6 to 15 percent over 300 to 400 euros, maximum penalty 4.600 euros
How to properly load your RV with a few helpful beginner tips!
The ADAC gives camping beginners valuable tips on what to consider when loading their mobile home. It is important to know the permissible total camper weight not to be exceeded. Information on this can be found in the registration certificate. This results from the curb weight of the vehicle and a possible payload and is usually 3,5 tons. It should be noted that even seemingly "little things" such as several bicycles or a full water tank can quickly lead to the weight being exceeded. Incidentally, fellow travelers also count towards the additional load.
