Clean the vehicle interior with a car vacuum cleaner? Our tips

[Display]

You are sure to keep a close eye on our various test reports, which often relate to the interior of vehicles. One of our biggest problems is cleaning the test vehicle interior “before” a test so that the pictures can also be used for the magazine and not various crumbs can be seen on every corner. So far we have done this with a classic vacuum cleaner, but why not just use a car vacuum cleaner? But what devices are there anyway? On the one hand, there are models with a battery or models with a cable for the 12-volt connection.

Why a car vacuum?

Every vehicle interior has various problem areas. The focus should therefore be on catching a small, powerful hand vacuum cleaner. Having your own hand-held vacuum saves time and money if you don't want to constantly use vacuum cleaners (now only available for a fee) at a petrol station or car wash.

What should be considered?

Corners, small angles and tiny cracks can hardly be reached with a normal house vacuum cleaner with a long, rigid suction tube. So the focus should be on a small, flexible design. The vacuum cleaner should have enough power to clean the carpet on the floor and in the trunk, where the dirt is often the most stubborn. Ideally, the car vacuum cleaner even has rotating brushes that allow deeper cleaning. Gentle upholstery nozzles are also important because hair and crumbs can hang firmly in the fabric, especially in the seat cushions. However, it is also important to ensure that the seats and backrests are of course not damaged.

Akkusauger? Why not!

But you have to remember that charging usually takes a very long time - much longer than the effective usable runtime. So one battery charge is absolutely sufficient for the whole car. So the vacuum cleaner battery should be good for at least a quarter of an hour. Of course, it always depends on the vehicle. The bigger the car, the longer the operating time, of course. Are you the owner of one SUVs certainly have to be factored in a few more minutes than one HotHatch.

Alternative 12-Volt connection?

But a trap lurks here: a hand-held vacuum cleaner that draws electricity from the on-board network naturally ensures that the car battery is discharged. If the radio is still on and the interior lighting is on, it can quickly be over. So the longer you are vacuuming, the higher the consumption of the vacuum cleaner and the faster the car battery dies.

Suction does not equal wattage!

The suction effect of a car vacuum cleaner and the wattage are not directly related. The wattage and power consumption, on the other hand, do. But the EU has already taken action here, because an EU regulation on electricity consumption is proving to be really useful here. It prevents that with higher negative pressure and the resulting better cleaning effect, only the nominal output (and thus the consumption) is increased without end.

And where to buy?

There are of course a large number of suppliers of car vacuum cleaners. We found a good way to include the above criteria in a search on Idealo.de. Here you can choose exactly the functions and properties that fit the vehicle and then compare the results output with each other.

Tip: Cheap home remedies are often sufficient for the average cleaning of car seats. There is more about this in our article "Dirt & stains on the car seat? These home remedies will help!".
