Classic car rally Mille Miglia: Stellantis Heritage brings three legendary Alfa Romeo to the start!

The Mille Miglia classic car rally starts on Wednesday (June 15, 2022) in Brescia, northern Italy. The new edition of the event once described by Enzo Ferrari as the "most beautiful race in the world" leads in four daily stages over around 1.600 kilometers - said 1.000 miles - to Rome and from there back to Brescia. More than 400 classic cars built up to 1957 are expected at the start of this regularity rally. 118 of them come from the brands Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Lancia – four icons of Italian motorsport.

Vintage car rally Mille Miglia

  • The 40th edition of the world's most important event of this kind will cover the approximately 15-mile route from Brescia in northern Italy to Rome and back from 18 to 2022 June 1.000.
  • Three vehicles from the Stellantis Heritage collection at the start: Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport from 1928, Alfa Romeo 1900 Sport Spider from 1954 and Alfa Romeo 1900 Sport Spider from 1956.
  • Stellantis Heritage is tasked with preserving and presenting the history of the Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia and Abarth brands.
  • The three vintage cars are accompanied by the new Alfa Romeo Tonale. The compact SUV with hybrid drive represents Alfa Romeo's metamorphosis into a manufacturer of electrified vehicle models.

Alfa Romeo officially supports the Mille Miglia and is represented with almost 50 vehicles in the field of participants - more than any other brand. Three of these classics come from the Stellantis Group collection and are normally on display at the Alfa Romeo Factory Museum in Arese near Milan: a 6 Alfa Romeo 1500C 1928 Super Sport, a 1900 Alfa Romeo 1954 Sport Spider and a 1900 Alfa Romeo 1956 Sport Spider XNUMX

These three jewels of the classic car collection are driven by exceptional crews. The two paediatricians Giovanni Moceri and Silvia Dicembre are taking part in the Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport, the winning vehicle of the Mille Miglia 2019. Francesco Pirozzi and Cristina Posta, two employees from the Stellantis plants Pomigliano d'Arco and Cassino respectively, start in the Alfa Romeo 1900 Super Sprint. And the Alfa Romeo 1900 Sport Spider is shared by Alessandro Alunni Bravi, Managing Director of the Sauber Group, which is behind the Alfa Romeo Formula 1 team, and sports commentator Vicky Piria. The three Alfa Romeos are part of the Stellantis Heritage collection of more than 600 vehicles. The department is responsible for preserving and promoting the historical heritage of the Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia and Abarth brands.

Alfa Romeo 6c 1500 super sport (1928)

The Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport with Farina bodywork resembles the racing car in which Giuseppe Campari and co-driver Giulio Ramponi won the 1928 Mille Miglia. The vehicle from the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo in Arese drove to victory in the new edition of the Mille Miglia as a classic car rally in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2019 and also won the "2007 Millas Sport" in Argentina in 2008 and 1000. The Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport is powered by a 1.487 cc in-line six-cylinder engine that delivers 4.800 hp at 76 rpm and a top speed of 140 km/h. Only 1928 examples of this model were built from 1929 to 31.

The number 6 Mille Miglia Alfa Romeo 1500C 41 Super Sport will be driven by Giovanni Moceri, a former Italian champion of the Grandi Eventi ACI Sport and winner of some of the most demanding regularity rallies for vintage cars. The passenger is his wife Silvia Dicembre.

Alfa Romeo 1900 Super Sprint (1956)

With the starting number 399, the Alfa Romeo 1900 Super Sprint goes on the 1.000-mile tour. The elegant coupe with Touring body is considered one of the most beautiful Gran Turismo vehicles of the 20th century. It is based on the Alfa Romeo 1900 that was advertised as "the family car that wins races" in the 1950s. The 1900 Super Sprint Coupé is based on the shortened chassis of the sedan. It is powered by a two-liter, four-cylinder engine, which is equipped with a double camshaft, as is typical for the brand. Its 115 hp at 5.500 rpm allow sporty driving performance.

As was still common in the 1950s, the great Italian designers bought ready-to-drive chassis from Alfa Romeo and completed them with bodies they designed and produced themselves. The most successful coupe based on the Alfa Romeo 1900 came from the Milan Carrozzeria Touring, whose version of the Alfa Romeo 1900 Super Sprint is still considered one of the most balanced and beautiful vehicle models that ever wore the Alfa Romeo brand emblem on the radiator grille. Almost 1954 examples were built from 1955 to 300.

The crew of Alfa Romeo 1900 Super Sprint is testimony to a unprecedented experiment that arose from the great sense of togetherness and the incomparable team spirit of the Alfa Romeo workforce: the legendary classic car is driven by two Stellantis employees. Francesco Pirozzi is a mechanical engineer and has been working at the Pomigliano d'Arco plant since 2005, first on the Alfa Romeo 147 and 159 models, then on the Fiat Panda. Today Pirozzi works in the production of the bodywork for the Alfa Romeo Tonale. Cristina Nota works at the Cassino plant. This team's participation in the Mille Miglia perfectly embodies Alfa Romeo's DNA and Italian sporting spirit.

Alfa Romeo 1900 Sport Spider (1954)

The Alfa Romeo 1900 Sport Spider was only produced twice. The very rare racing spider has an engine under the hood based on the four-cylinder twin camshaft engine of the Alfa Romeo 1900. Equipped with a dry sump oil circuit, the engine delivers 138 hp and accelerates the racing spider to up to 220 km/h. This impressive speed for the time is partly due to the very low vehicle weight of 880 kilograms, but also partly to the efficient aerodynamics and the five-speed gearbox, which was advanced for the time. The rear axle based on the DeDion principle ensures good road holding. The body of the Alfa Romeo 1900 Sport Spider was designed by the innovative designer Franco Scaglione for Carrozzeria Bertone.

The extraordinary vehicle has the starting number 342. Alessandro Alunni Bravi is behind the wheel. The Italian is Managing Director of the Sauber Group, Alfa Romeo's partner in the Formula 1 World Championship. Co-driver is Vittoria "Vicky" Piria, who has already gained experience as a racing driver herself and is known to Italian motorsport fans as a sports commentator.

As part of the Mille Miglia, Alfa Romeo bridges the gap between history and the present. The brand, which is celebrating its 112th birthday this year, is juxtaposing the three classic cars with the new Alfa Romeo Tonale. With hybrid drive, the Alfa Romeo Tonale is the brand's first electrified model, which is now also available for test drives at German dealerships. The new Alfa Romeo Tonale symbolizes the brand's metamorphosis towards alternative forms of propulsion. Still, the new hybrid SUV respects the Alfa Romeo values and DNA that unite the Alfisti of yesterday and today. Photo credit: Stellantis
