The best thing about it: You enjoy maximum flexibility, can design the trip according to your own taste and look forward to many highlights. Austria offers countless cultural and historical sights, but also breathtakingly beautiful nature. How you plan your holiday is up to you - but it is clear that a trip with a camper van in Austria becomes an unforgettable experience.

On the road in Austria: What is fundamentally important!

Adventure on the road: with the camper through Austria!

A bit of adventure, a bit of culture and a lot of relaxation in between - no question, a road trip with a camper through Austria is a perfect and varied holiday. What is important, however, is its route to plan carefully, so that the journey does not degenerate into stress. Enough time to explore and relax at the individual stops should therefore definitely be allowed for. In any case, you can look forward to a lot of variety in Austria - regardless of whether you get to know the Alps or one of the many cities worth seeing.

With the camper on Austria's roads: This is important to note!

Austria is an ideal travel destination for a camping holiday in particular - so you can be sure that you will meet many like-minded people on the way. If you are traveling with your camper on Austrian roads, you must basically follow the same rules as in Germany. However, it is of course important to be guided by the specified maximum speed and to adhere to the special Austrian regulations in road traffic.

Especially with the camper there are special speed limits that you absolutely have to stick to. In order to be sure what speed is allowed, it must first be clear how high that is Total weight of the vehicle is. Campers with a maximum total weight of 3,5 tons are allowed to drive at a maximum of 50 km/h in Austria, and a maximum of 100 km/h outside of them. And there are also speed limits on expressways: 100 km/h are permitted, on the other hand 130 on motorways. Furthermore, a maximum speed of 110 km/h applies on transit motorways between 22 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Important: If the total weight of the vehicle is more than 3,5 tons, the camper may be driven at 50 km/h in built-up areas and only 70 km/h outside of built-up areas. This applies to both country roads and expressways, but 80 km/h are permitted on motorways.

The dimensions of the camper also play a role

In Austria, a maximum width of 2,55 m is prescribed for caravans. The vehicle must also not be longer than 12 m. If the route leads through a tunnel, over bridges or over mountain passes, it must also be noted that restrictions can be expected depending on the dimensions of the vehicle - this applies to both locals and travelers. It is best to follow the signs to be on the safe side. However, there is also the possibility of special permits for certain vehicles.

Toll sticker and toll on Austria's roads

In general, tolls are charged for locals and travelers on Austrian expressways and motorways. Payment of this is made by a Vignette shown on the windshield. This vignette must already be attached to the windshield on the motorway slip roads and at the roundabouts. If you want to avoid toll costs, you can use country roads instead, although this can of course increase the travel time significantly.

The self-adhesive vignette, which is also known as a sticker, can be purchased at border crossings, petrol stations or directly at toll stations and stuck on on site. There is also a digital vignette that online is available. If the camper has a total weight of more than 3,5 tons, a so-called GO box available. It records the route driven with the camper and is then billed afterwards. Under no circumstances should you drive on toll roads without a valid vignette - a high fee can be charged for this Fines (€) attack!

Special toll routes in Austria

There are some routes in Austria on which the normal vignette is not valid. These are special toll routes, and additional fees are charged for using them. These include the following:

  • A16 – Arlberg Tunnel
  • A13 – Autostrada del Brennero, towards Italy
  • A11 – Karawanken tunnel towards Slovenia
  • A10 – Tauern Autobahn with Tauern and Katschberg tunnels
  • A9 – sections of the Pyhrn autobahn: Bosruck and Gleinalm tunnels

Important: If you pass through the Karawanken Tunnel in the direction of Slovenia, you do not need a Slovenian vignette, as you drive directly onto the motorway and cannot stop.

Information on traffic in Austria

Austria is a classic travel destination in Europe, which is visited and driven through by many tourists. Because of this, the expressways and motorways are often full. Especially on weekends there are often traffic jams or slow traffic around big cities like Vienna or Innsbruck. During the holiday season, there are often long traffic jams on the motorway. It can also happen that some tunnels and roads are closed due to construction work and you have to switch to mountain passes. It is therefore advisable to find out more about possible alternative routes in advance.
