Micro-camper: the new Mercedes Citan model 2021

Vanlife is booming, especially vehicles with exterior dimensions similar to those of a passenger car are becoming increasingly popular among motorhome enthusiasts and those who want to become one. In recent years, Mercedes-Benz has successfully established itself with its basic vehicles in all classes - from liner to camper to micro-camper - and is planning further growth. There is also the “in-house” compact Marco Polo model family. The latest building block in the growth strategy of the brand with the star in the travel and leisure vehicle market: the recently introduced successor to the Mercedes ‑ Benz among small vans, the new Citan. The new Citan is a completely new development. The vehicle has the DNA typical of the brand, for example in terms of its unmistakable design, connectivity and safety.

Particularly compact external dimensions with well thought-out space in the interior also open up a wide range of possibilities in the increasingly popular area of ​​micro-camper conversions. Mercedes-Benz and VanEssa mobilcamping are demonstrating what such conversions can currently look like at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf from August 28 to September 5 in Hall 16.

“The travel and recreational vehicle market is growing in importance for us as part of our strategic orientation. This also applies to the brand new generation of our Citan, which is an ideal base vehicle for micro camper use. That is why we specifically selected the Caravan Salon for its first trade fair appearance. Together with the company VanEssa mobilcamping, we are showing in an exemplary way the camper qualities that it has, ”says Klaus Rehkugler, Head of Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Vans. "We look forward to being in Düsseldorf again this year and to the feedback from customers on site."

The highlights of the new Citan at a glance

In the small vans segment, Mercedes-Benz presented the successor to the Citan on August 25. The completely newly developed vehicle shows itself with various product highlights.

  • The new Citan offers plenty of space and storage space. It starts as a touring and panel van in the standard length with a wheelbase of 2.716 millimeters. Other variants with a long wheelbase and the Mixto followed. Even in the standard length, the Citan offers more space than its predecessor. There are also numerous shelves and compartments in the interior.
  • Balanced proportions and sensual surface design characterize the design of the new Citan. Muscular shoulders and pronounced wheel arches emphasize power and emotionality - unusual stylistic devices in a small van. A particular eye-catcher in the interior is the sensual horizontal shape of the instrument panel.
  • For typical brand comfort, among other things Wide-opening sliding doors on both the left and right-hand side (standard on the tourer, option on the panel van) as well as aeroacoustic measures to reduce wind noise. On request, there is also comfort equipment familiar from the passenger car sector, such as THERMOTRONIC, KEYLESS GO and an electric parking brake.[2]
  • The new Citan can also be optionally equipped with the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system. The strengths of MBUX include the intuitive operating concept via touchscreen, touch control buttons on the steering wheel and Hey Mercedes voice control, smartphone integration and digital radio (DAB and DAB +). Numerous digital services from Mercedes me connect are also available ex works in the new small van with the star. Customers stay connected to the vehicle at all times.
  • The developers at Mercedes-Benz placed particular emphasis on driving behavior that is typical of the brand. The result: a complete re-tuning of the chassis - especially with regard to suspension, damping and stabilizers.
  • A 1,5 ‑ liter diesel in three output levels and a 1,3 ‑ liter gasoline engine in two variants make up the engine range for the new Citan at market launch. Common strengths are good drivability even at low engine speeds and low fuel consumption. All motors are combined with an ECO start / stop function. In addition, the Citan will also be available with an electric drive in the second half of 2022.
  • Safety is an essential brand value at Mercedes ‑ Benz. The stable body structure with energy-absorbing load paths as well as the extensive equipment with modern driver assistance systems contribute to this in the new Citan; many of them come as standard, such as Hill Start Assist, Crosswind Assist, the drowsiness warning ATTENTION ASSIST and the Mercedes-Benz emergency call. These can support and relieve the driver in numerous situations.

With VanEssa modules for a micro camper

From everyday vehicle to micro-camper in the blink of an eye, that is the predominant concept in the vanlife scene for the vehicle category of small vans and works with so-called furniture modules that can be flexibly installed and removed. At the Caravan Salon 2021, Mercedes-Benz and VanEssa mobilcamping, one of the leading providers in the industry, are showing two examples of such solutions based on the new Citan Tourer: a mobile camping kitchen and a sleeping system.[3]

  • The VanEssa system kitchen for the rear of the vehicle is based on a drawer system and includes: an integrated cartridge cooker, a rinsing facility with a 13 liter water tank and a 31 liter compressor cool box. There is also enough space for dishes and supplies. The kitchen module weighs around 60 kilograms and can therefore be installed and removed in minutes. Different color options provide scope for individualization.
  • With the VanEssa sleeping system, the rear of the small van can be transformed into a comfortable place to sleep in just a few simple steps. This is ensured by a high quality mattress. During the journey, the system rests in the trunk on the mobile kitchen, the rear seats can be used without restriction. The sleeping module in the new Citan is 115 centimeters wide and 189 centimeters long, so there is space for up to two people.
