With a Mercedes SL 600 (R 129) with a thick V12 State limousine do? No problem with this SL. Because the open-air classic with the chassis number WDBFA76FX2F202435 (MB 777 Silver Metallic) was based on the look of the State limousine Mercedes 600 rebuilt. And that even works with just two doors. And the result? Takes getting used to! At least that's how we feel. Because the Mercedes Grand SL 600 Silver Arrow Roadster as a homage to the state limousine Mercedes 600 (W 100) looks a bit out of proportion.

Although the retro look cannot be denied, it is doubtful whether an SL 600 from the R 129 series was the right choice for the conversion. But one thing is clear: The vehicle is unique! Mercedes built the rare base as the SL 600 Silver Arrow as a special model at the end of the SL series only for the USA. Only 100 vehicles with V12 were available from April 2001 only in America. The SL 500 Silver Arrow with V8 on the other hand, it was built 1.450 times.

Incidentally, the team from the US tuner "Classic Car Restoration, LLC". The vehicle was in hours manual work and specially manufactured on customer request. For that you have the complete shell remodeledin order to get as close as possible to the Mercedes 600 (W 100) from 1963. This was also successful from the front and back, but understandably it was hardly feasible from the side. After all, the W 100 is a classic sedan and the SL a two-door roadster with a much shorter wheelbase. From the soft top or the hardtop (both continue to work as usual) not to mention.

Doesn't matter! One thing is certain, the original SL can hardly be identified. And that's a unique selling proposition! But what exactly was done? The tuner installed one at the front original grille in combination with the appropriate chrome apron, completely new Fenders and even the headlights are adapted to the optics of the 600. The bonnet has opened to the front since the renovation and the Doors as well as the long rear ones sides are also revised. A typical feature are those chrome-plated wheel arch covers all around and even to the two characteristic ones Contour lines the 600 was thought.

the convertible top remains fully functional

However, the windshield clearly shows the R 129 SL. Well, it probably never should be an exact copy either. And at the stern? You have put a lot of effort into achieving a successful result. Especially when the top (the hard top) is closed, we really like the look of the conversion. You can see narrow ones tail lights, a sparkling one Chrome bumper and two slim, chrome-plated tailpipes right and left. There was also one that had grown significantly in the center Mercedes star and a filigree molding across the entire width of the tailgate. Even small details like that Door handles was thought. It is unclear why no one has also taken the trouble to install suitable rear-view mirrors. The wheelset could also have been a little more creative. A nice aluminum rim with Steel rims look and Chrome ring would have been perfect. No matter, the built-in 18-inch rims do the same.

6,0 liter V12 (M 120 E 60)

And what exactly is under the retro hood? Nicht the 6,3 liter V8 (M 100) with 250 hp from the state body. Instead the unchanged one 6,0 liter V12 (M 120 E 60) with 394 hp and 570 Nm torque. Coupled with the well-known five-speed automatic and the typical rear-wheel drive, it is definitely the better choice. And inside? There was save notable changes!
