Torn by hand: Toyota GR Supra (2022) with manual transmission!

We already had this topic a good two weeks ago addressed and now it's reality. Toyota has the Supra with them Manual transmission (BMW part code GS6L50TZ / GS6) presented. The Japanese bring the Supra as model year 2022 with one Six-speed box for the six-cylinder (the four-cylinder is still only available as an automatic), with which you can finally switch gears yourself again. The handset is visually recognizable by the red "Supra" lettering on the rear apron.

Rumor has it the parts are a combination of ZF-manufactured manual transmissions. However, as an exclusive combination of parts  for the GR Supra. In addition, Toyota appears to have collaborated with ZF and BMW on the "design/layout of the shifter/pedal, gear ratio, intelligent manual transmission function (iMT) tuning, rev match function (Rev Match), or shift feel."

According to Toyota, the manual transmission is a completely new development, but this does not apply to the well-known 3,0-liter engine from BMW. We already know it and it will remain unchanged. Toyota titles the gear box as "intelligent manual transmission“ (iMT) with special software to prioritize performance. But how does the system work? It further optimizes engine torque while depressing the clutch pedal during upshifts and releasing it later. It also allows for “constant power” when downshifting.

If you don't like that, you can use the iMT at any time deactivate, by activating the sport mode. Incidentally, the final ratio of the variant with manual transmission is 3,46, while vehicles with automatic transmission have a final ratio of 3,15. In other words, the manual variant enables a better start and better acceleration, but without electronic limitation it is more likely to hit the limiter in sixth gear. And Toyota even declares that shift knob in detail. It should weigh 200 grams and the leverage should hardly require any effort when shifting. In addition, the hand-torn Supra has a slightly modified one Console and the position of driving mode switch is also different. A 42 millimeter gap was created between the climate control buttons and the shift knob.

the Supra was put on a diet

In addition to the manual transmission, the Supra lost well 40 kg total mass and the suspension, the steering as well as the Track mode has been optimized for easier drifts. The so-called Hairpin+ function is intended to enable a greater difference in the degree of wheel spin, which should make the Supra even more fun to drive on winding roads. By the way, the facelift is still available this year and that even in Europe. Only the concrete prices or other technical data such as the top speed, acceleration or consumption are not yet known.

PS. Is the Supra with clutch pedal perhaps a harbinger of the technically closely related BMW Z4 M40i (G29 LCI) as a manual switch? We are excited! If we get more information about the changes, there is of course an update for this report. You will be informed about this if you simply use our Feed subscribe to.
