80s style: Toyota Hilux with body kit from Axell Auto!

It is one of the best-selling pickups in the world. And even if it is not even offered in the USA, the Toyota Hilux still manages to persuade millions of car buyers far from the homeland of pickup culture to get one. In 2022, for example, it was the best-selling car model in Australia and South Africa, and tuners also love the compact pickup, which has already become a legend. For example, Axell Auto is introducing a restyling package called the Brody-Kit, which gives the current generation of the platform truck a look of the Land Cruiser of the 80s. There are three different variants to choose from, and we would like to introduce them to you today.

 Off-road variants & street truck

The set consists of rectangular LED headlights with separate indicators surrounded by either a black grille or a chrome grille. The bonnet is also flatter and higher than on a production Hilux to give it a certain truck feeling. The blue pickup truck pictured also has 17-inch alloy wheels shod with Yokohama Geolander X-AT all-terrain tires. On top of that, the model has various black decorative elements. Otherwise, it comes with a black rear structure, which looks simple and robust at the same time.

The street truck, which goes by the name "Lowdown", was lowered by a few centimeters and got black-finish alloy wheels with Yokohama Advan Sport tires. In addition, the model offers a special platform, which is variable, so that even bulky objects can be transported effortlessly. Last but not least, there's a true off-road truck called the Highlift, which has been painted bronze metallic. The higher model not only has side pipes, an LED light unit on the front bumper, and all-terrain tires, which have been mounted on impressive bronze-colored rims, but also surprises with one Rooftent and a camping kit.

2,4 liter turbo diesel / 2,8 liter turbo diesel

Diesel engines between 150 & 204 hp provide propulsion and the maximum torque is between 400 Newton meters for the smaller unit and a strong 500 Newton meters for the larger engine. Customers also have the choice between a 6-speed manual transmission and an automatic with six gears. Depending on requirements, 2WD versions with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive variants are available.

Our conclusion:

  • The three vehicles presented are not necessarily intended for European tastes, but such retro kits are popular in Japan. In this respect, the chance that you will see the restyling modifications in Europe is small. If we get more information about the changes, there is of course an update for this report.
