Twelve years after the premiere of the first Audi R8 GT, Audi Sport GmbH is launching the second edition of this exclusive super sports car: the new Audi R8 Coupé V10 GT RWD. The 5,2-litre V10 naturally aspirated engine has been boosted to 456 kW (620 hp), making it the most powerful unit in the history of the brand with rear-wheel drive. A new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission for faster gear changes and the new Torque Rear driving mode allows drivers to choose their own level of ESC support. This enables controlled and at the same time precise oversteer.
The R8 GT says goodbye to the V10 engine
The seven levels of Torque Rear can be set using the operating satellites on the steering wheel. The new R8 GT is limited to 333 units worldwide. New and exclusive exterior and interior equipment details pay homage to the first generation of the R8 GT. These include, for example, consecutive numbering, special light-alloy wheels and an interior in a combination of black and red. The new Audi R8 Coupé V10 GT RWD will be available from dealers from 2023. The price starts at 225.000 euros.
Compared to the R8 V10 performance RWD with 570 hp, which forms the basis for the second edition of the R8 GT, Audi Sport GmbH has increased the performance of the special model in order to raise it to the same level as the quattro model. Specifically, this means: 620 hp from 10 cylinders, 5,2-liter displacement and 565 Nm, which are available from 6.400 to 7.000 rpm (maximum speed: 8.700 rpm).
The new R8 GT accelerates to 3,4 km/h in 100 seconds, reaches the 200 km/h mark after just 10,1 seconds and has a top speed of 320 km/h. Another key difference: a new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with even shorter shift times. Thanks to a modified transmission ratio and the associated higher engine speed level, the new transmission allows even more impressive acceleration in all gears. A visual highlight for the V10: The intake manifold of the R8 GT shines exclusively in black.
New driving mode Torque Rear
Audi Sport GmbH, which produces the new R8 GT largely by hand in the Böllinger Höfe, is offering the torque rear mode for the first time. The slip is controlled on the rear axle by the traction control, i.e. the anti-slip regulation (ASR). It is part of the ESC. Seven characteristic curves are stored in the ASR, which offer different levels of support. Level 1 allows little slippage, while level 7 allows a lot of slippage. The desired torque rear level can be set by turning the control satellite on the steering wheel. This function also enables a gradual adjustment to the different driving skills and the track conditions. Depending on this and taking into account the information from the wheel speed sensors, steering angle, accelerator pedal position and selected gear, the engine control unit doses the driving forces on the rear axle.
Less is more
Compared to the R8 Coupé V10 performance RWD, various measures have made it possible to reduce the weight by around 20 kilograms to a total of 1570 kilograms (without the driver). The exclusive 20-inch wheels in 10-spoke design, which can be combined with the Michelin Sport Cup 2 high-performance tires developed for road and race track, make a significant contribution to the weight saving. The lightweight forged wheels are based on the motorsport vehicles from Audi. Further weight was saved by the extremely powerful ceramic brake system installed as standard in the R8 GT.
There are also the R8 bucket seats and the performance sports suspension with CFRP stabilizer. The anti-roll bar on the front axle is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic. Together with the coupling rod connections made of red anodized aluminum (provides protection against corrosion), it reduces the weight and ensures even better road holding and dynamics when cornering. An even sportier R8 GT coilover suspension is available as an option. This enables an individual adjustment of the trim position as well as the rebound and compression stages for your R8 GT. With the delivery of the R8 GT, customers receive setting instructions and the appropriate tools.
A befitting appearance
In order to distinguish the new Audi R8 V10 GT RWD from its relatives, the special model has exclusive add-on parts. The first identifying feature: the black “R8 GT” lettering on the rear. All other emblems are black. With the high-gloss carbon aero kit developed in the wind tunnel, the package generates better stability on the road, and thus higher cornering speeds. In total, the carbon aerokit consists of the following attachments: front splitter, flics, side skirts, cW-Elements on the side of the rear bumper, a diffuser and rear wing with gooseneck suspension.
This insert ensures an optimal underflow of the wing and thus improves the aerodynamic effectiveness. In keeping with the style of its predecessor, the new R8 GT comes in matt Suzuka grey. Alternatively, there is a choice of tango red metallic and daytona gray metallic. In the interior, Audi Sport GmbH continues the homage to the first R8 GT from 2010. The interior is made in a combination of black and red. This also includes red belts – only available in the R8 GT twelve years ago. The floor mats and the R8 bucket seats feature the lettering of the special model in black and red. A highlight: customers will find the consecutive numbering of their R8 GT in the center below the selector lever, partially matted in the carbon insert.
