Only a few 40-year-olds are so fit and still an icon: the 1982 Series BMW E3, which was first delivered in 30, celebrates a milestone birthday in 2022 and continues to fascinate to this day. It was the basis for the first M3, which is still revered to this day. 6,7 seconds to 100 km/h (models without a cat) were a statement back then, even if a current M3 Competition (G20) now does the same exercise in 3,9 seconds. To this day, the racing version of the M3 is the most successful touring car of all time, and its sporting spirit inspires every 3-series BMW up to the 316. After all, driving fun isn't based solely on horsepower - agile handling is at least as important. In addition, the springs and dampers of the different models can be brought to eye level relatively easily. Best with the help of BILSTEIN: The company, which is very active and successful in racing, offers a few chassis highlights worth considering for both old and new 3 Series – whether it’s the classic E30 or the current G20. Depending on the vehicle model, the spectrum of use ranges from street to track to race.

BILSTEIN looks for and finds potential for optimization – also visually

All BMW 3 Series offer a sporty suspension ex works, but the real enthusiasts don't go far enough. This is where the experts from BILSTEIN step in and use extensive driving tests to determine whether and where there is potential for optimization. A significant upgrade, which is only insufficiently served by the works with maximum values of around 15 millimeters, is the lowering. But the potential is usually much higher - or lower: The BILSTEIN B40 Pro-Kit sports suspension (approx. 12 euros) for models in the E868 series allows up to 30 millimeters. BILSTEIN offers up to 55 millimeters for current three-wheelers, for example with the coilovers BILSTEIN EVO S (1335 euros), or SE with the support of electronic damper control (2939 euros), and T1 (2184 euros). The racing suspension EVO R (4940 euros) even comes up to 70 mm.

In addition to the improved driving characteristics, it is above all the visual impression that results from the lowering: a full, sporty appearance that makes every three-seater appear agile even when stationary. But the best thing is that the BILSTEIN suspensions provide a better driving experience, allow higher cornering speeds and even improve driving comfort.

No compromises: improved chassis performance in all areas

The linchpin of all considerations is the special driving experience that every BILSTEIN suspension conveys: the damping should be sporty, but not too hard, the steering behavior must be significantly more precise and, finally, driving comfort should not be neglected. BILSTEIN spends a great deal of time here evaluating all the points mentioned in road tests with highly specialized test drivers and looking for the best solutions in each case.

BILSTEIN B12 Pro-Kit – the sports suspension for the classics of today and tomorrow

For fans, the E30 is one of the most beautiful BMW 3 Series, and the legendary, first M3 was launched in its era. Unfortunately, originals are rare and expensive, but at least in terms of chassis technology, the BILSTEIN B30 Pro-Kit on E12 models can set the course a little in the direction of the M3. It works very harmoniously and works really well both as a sports and as a long-distance chassis.

Perfect choice for the current BMW 3 Series: the BILSTEIN EVO coilovers

The current BMW 3 Series (G20) has been on the market for three years, and its performance can be increased almost infinitely with the help of BILSTEIN. The EVO S coilover kit can be described as an all-rounder, which combines maximum performance and maximum comfort with its cool look in anthracite. With its tighter characteristic curve, it allows higher cornering speeds than the standard suspension and offers more driving comfort than the off-the-shelf M suspension. Thanks to the further development of the internal fixation of the spring plate, it allows a lowering of up to 55 millimeters and offers a double tuned damper setting. The otherwise identical variant EVO SE also supports a factory-installed electronic damper control.

The sharper versions of the EVO series are perfectly tailored to the sports driver. For example the EVO T1, which track day fans can individually adjust to any race track in ten clicks (rebound and compression) using an aluminum adjustment wheel. The maximum lowering is up to 55 millimeters. Even more uncompromising is the pure motorsport suspension EVO R, which may only be used on track. Photo credit: ThyssenKrupp Bilstein GmbH
