For several years now, the Concorso d'Eleganza in Villa d'Este has been an integral part of BMW's annual planning. Successful concept studies like that are presented again and again BMW 2002 homage which probably 90% of all BMW M drivers wished for the series. And sometimes it even works. The best example is the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé Concept from which the new 8 Series was created. And they had come up with something again for the 2019 Concorso. Namely the BMW 2200ti Garmisch Concept that made it to Pebble Beach 2019. This time, however, the vehicle reveals a glimpse into the past instead of into the future. The "new" 2200ti was not designed by anyone like Marcello Gandini (has already designed the Lamborghini Miura, the Countach or the Lancia Stratos) drawn by BMW design chief Adrian van Hooydonk. And it's officially called "BMW 2200ti Garmisch". The basis for the coupe is an original 2002 tii. And the restoration team made up of designers and specialists from BMW Classic has done a great job.

It's hard to believe that even new design and implementation methods such as 3D printing have been incorporated here. Originally the BMW Garmisch was presented at the Geneva Motor Show 1970 and he has also influenced the later 5er (E12, 1972) of Paul Braq and also the first 7er (E23, 1977). The Bertone body was a kind of homage to the classic forms of the Bavarian manufacturer in the form of a reinterpretation. But the original has disappeared - without a trace! Therefore the new building. In the back there was the striking rear window with a striking honeycomb grid in black as a contrast to the champagne-colored paint job. In front, it is especially the kidney that stands out because it was rotated by 90 degrees and shaped square. To the right and left huge headlights with large glass surfaces. And inside, too, much is as it was then, but newly interpreted.

everything inside is as it was then

The minimalist interior has classic instruments and a radio rotated 90 degrees. In addition, white and brown leather with inserts made of wood and a typical black plastic that the now 80-year-old Marcello Gandini could remember exactly, as well as the color combination of the seats. Another cool detail is the large folding mirror on the passenger side of the dashboard, which suggests an LCD screen. And Gandini also knew what the pretty, but rather impractical, rims looked like. Almost everything fits. Almost - because it looks different with weight. At 1.600 kg, the current concept car is significantly heavier than the original, which weighs just over a ton. For this, the new one has, for example, donated the kidneys and surrounds of the taillights from the full. The result was successful in any case because the "new Garmisch" should be pretty much exactly the same as the one that unfortunately disappeared without a trace.
