More than €165.000 expensive and 550 hp strong: the BMW M4 CSL (2022)!

To mark its 50th anniversary, BMW M GmbH is presenting a special model based on its successful high-performance automobiles in the mid-range premium segment. The new BMW M4 CSL combines traditional racing passion with innovative technology and thus ensures an inimitable performance experience. With outstanding power and intelligent lightweight construction, its configuration as a two-seater, a model-specific, refined chassis technology and individual equipment features, the new BMW M4 CSL is consistently designed for use on the race track. The common genes that it shares with its motorsport counterpart, the BMW M4 GT3, are also reflected in its performance characteristics.

BMW M4 CSL (2022)!

During test drives on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, the BMW M4 CSL achieved the best lap times ever determined for a BMW Group production vehicle. In the comparative measurement over 20,6 kilometers (excluding the straight in route section T13), he came up with a value of 7:15,677 minutes. The official and notarized time for the 20,832-kilometer full lap is 7:20,207 minutes. The values of 3,7 seconds for the sprint from zero to 100 km/h and 10,7 seconds for the acceleration from zero to 200 km/h are also impressive.

"Competition, sport, lightweight construction": A concept rich in tradition.

The puristic racing character of the BMW M4 CSL is based on a traditional concept that has been given a fascinating expression with the latest development expertise and the latest technology. The abbreviation CSL stands for "Competition, Sport, Lightweight Construction" and refers to the central importance of weight-optimized construction for success in racing. The BMW 3.0 CSL, developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH based on this principle, won the European Touring Car Championship straight away in 1973.

In addition, the BMW M4 CSL follows in the footsteps of successful special models from previous generations of the BMW M3/M4 series, which include in particular the legendary BMW M3 CSL from 2003 and the BMW M2016 GTS presented in 4. The world premiere of the BMW M4 CSL as part of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este (May 20-22, 2022) is one of the highlights of BMW M GmbH's anniversary year. The special model will be produced from July 2022 in a limited edition of exactly 1 units at the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing.

Fundamental and detailed: Intelligent lightweight construction in the BMW M4 CSL.

With the innovative power and racing know-how of BMW M GmbH, it was possible to limit the DIN unladen weight of the special model to 1 kilograms. The outstanding power-to-weight ratio of 625 kilograms per hp (2,95 kg/kW) offers the perfect conditions for a highly dynamic driving experience. The use of M Carbon full bucket seats alone results in a weight reduction of around 4,01 kilograms compared to the standard seats in the BMW M24 Competition Coupé. The weight balance is minus 4 kilograms due to the omission of the rear seats and their belts, the integration of a partition and the associated adjustments in the luggage compartment.

A further 21 kilograms are saved in the chassis area, among other things due to the particularly light M carbon-ceramic brake system and specific light-alloy wheels, springs and struts. Reducing the acoustic insulation and switching to particularly light soundproofing result in savings of around 15 kilograms. The use of CFRP components reduces the weight by around 11 kilograms.

In addition to the CFRP roof, the BMW M4 CSL also has a bonnet and a luggage compartment lid made from the lightweight, high-tech material. Its center console is also made of CFRP. Thanks to its titanium rear silencer, the exhaust system is more than 4 kilograms lighter. A further 4 kilograms are saved by detailed measures in the areas of the BMW kidney grille, rear lights, floor mats and automatic air conditioning, among other things.

Exclusive exterior finish, model-specific design features.

The body of the BMW M4 CSL is painted in the exclusive variant Frozen Brooklyn Gray metallic as standard. Together with visible carbon surfaces and red accents, it ensures an expressive, puristic, sporty appearance. Alternatively, the exterior colors alpine white non-metallic and sapphire black metallic are offered.

The carbon structure of the body components is evident, for example, in the area of two indentations on the bonnet. These surfaces that are not painted in the body color are additionally highlighted with a red border. The course of the two fins on the CFRP roof, the contours of the side skirts, the black model lettering and the model-specific CFRP air splitters and inserts of the air curtains in the area of the front apron are also particularly emphasized with red accent lines.

BMW laser light: Yellow headlights and innovative rear lights.

The BMW laser light headlights, which are available as special equipment, set another particularly striking accent at the front of the new BMW M4 CSL. Both in the welcome display after unlocking the doors and when the low beam and high beam are activated, they don't shine in white, but in yellow and thus refer to successful GT racing vehicles.

As standard, the LED rear lights on the BMW M4 CSL feature technology that is being presented for the first time in a production vehicle. Their cover glasses are traversed by filigree threads of light, which are made to shine using laser technology and thus create a lively structure on the surface of the rear lights. They give the rear lights of the special model an unmistakable signature that can be recognized from afar in the night design.

Six-cylinder in-line engine with racing-oriented characteristics.

The model-specific drive unit of the BMW M4 CSL is based on the same in-line six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-rev characteristics as the engine used in the BMW M4 GT3 racing car. Its great potential enabled a significant increase in performance in connection with unrestricted qualities in terms of stability and durability. It was achieved by increasing the maximum boost pressure of the two mono-scroll turbochargers from 1,7 bar to 2,1 bar and by tuning the engine management system specifically for the model. Already between 2 750 and 5 950 min-1 the engine of the BMW M4 CSL provides its maximum torque of 650 Nm. It achieves its maximum output of 405 kW/550 hp at a speed of 6250 rpm.

The design principle for the 3,0 liter engine, adapted from racing, is consistently geared towards high speeds and maximum power development. A linerless closed-deck construction helps its crankcase to be extremely rigid. The forged lightweight crankshaft enables a particularly high torque to be developed. Another M-specific feature is the core of the cylinder head, which is manufactured using a 3D printing process.

The engine's drive torque is transmitted to the rear wheels via an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. A model-specific engine and transmission mount favors the spontaneous and direct conversion of the drive power into driving dynamics. The tighter connection of the engine and transmission to the vehicle structure is particularly noticeable in highly dynamic driving situations.

Optimized body rigidity, model-specific chassis technology.

Parallel to its engine and in close coordination with its individual performance characteristics, the chassis technology of the new BMW M4 CSL has also been further developed in numerous details. The significantly reduced vehicle weight and the model-specifically optimized body rigidity were also taken into account in order to raise the combination of agility, dynamics and precision in handling characteristic of BMW M automobiles to a new level.

In the engine compartment of the new BMW M4 CSL, body rigidity has been increased with the aid of a completely newly developed package of precision struts. The cast aluminum elements between the spring strut domes and the front end have a geometry that has been precisely matched to the forces acting in different driving situations with the help of numerical models. Independent axle kinematics as well as model-specific wheel camber values, shock absorbers, additional springs and stabilizers optimize the steering precision, the transmission of cornering forces, the response of the suspension and damping as well as the wheel control.

The model-specific wheel suspension is associated with a vehicle lowering by 8 millimeters compared to the BMW M4 Competition Coupé. The standard equipment of the special model also includes an Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers, electromechanical M Servotronic steering with variable gear ratio and the M carbon-ceramic brake system. An M-specific version of the integrated brake system conveys a binding pedal feel even in highly dynamic driving situations and in adverse road conditions.

M Traction Control optimized for the race track.

The standard M Traction Control function with model-specific tuning designed for use on the race track allows the driver to individually set the intervention thresholds for wheel slip limitation. Levels 1 to 5 support controlled drift maneuvers on dry roads. Levels 6 to 10 of M Traction Control are based on the application developed for competitive vehicles in touring car racing and, in addition to the condition of the road, also take tire temperatures into account in order to ensure maximum traction and driving stability.

They are equipped with high-performance tires specially developed for the special model in the dimensions 275/35 ZR19 at the front and 285/30 ZR20 at the rear.

Equipment for racing feeling and suitability for everyday use.

Model-specific equipment scopes help the BMW M4 CSL to achieve an individual balance between puristic sports car characteristics, unrestricted suitability for everyday use and exclusive premium substance. The M Carbon full-bucket seats for the driver and his co-pilot are characterized by their self-supporting CFRP structure and a deliberate omission of comfort features. They have a fixed backrest inclination, the longitudinal position can be varied manually, and the seat height can only be adjusted in a workshop using a three-stage screw linkage. In addition, the M Carbon full bucket seats offer detachable headrests and the option of integrating a six-point belt system.

In the interior, the M Alcantara steering wheel, the anthracite-colored headliner, interior trim strips in carbon fiber, "CSL" lettering on the seats, the center console and the rear wall in the rear and M-specific displays create the perfect ambience for concentrated driving pleasure. The standard equipment also includes the Merino leather upholstery with extended features and the M seat belts. Two helmet racks are available in the rear.
