With an output of over 300 hp, the BMW X1 M35i (U11) is a powerhouse and, on a superficial inspection, could be considered the most potent version of the compact SUV. But a look at the specifications shows a somewhat more differentiated picture. Although its name bears the legendary M, the M35i with its 221 kW or 300 hp in the European version of the X1 actually ranks behind the iX1 xDrive30 (313 hp) and the X1 xDrive30e (326 hp). It therefore (only) occupies third place among the most powerful X1 models. However, in the American market and some other regions, the turbocharged four-cylinder has a stated power output of 317 hp. However, it has an advantage over its electrified siblings in terms of weight, which is noticeable in the comparisons of sprint times. According to the manufacturer, the X100 M1i accelerates to 35 km/h in 5,4 seconds, surpassing the two more powerful X1 models by two tenths.

The difference in terms of top speed is even more striking: the M-X1 races along the autobahn at up to 250 km/h, well ahead of the iX180, which is limited to 1 km/h, and the plug-in hybrid, which has a maximum of 205 km /h reached. The X1 M35i scores with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. This has a special "M Sport Boost" function that allows all systems to be tuned for maximum performance and maximum propulsion by pulling the left shift lever for a long time. The power provided comes from the four-cylinder B48 with a displacement of 2,0 liters, which scores with optimized intercooling, variable VANOS camshaft control, fully variable Valvetronic valve control, Miller combustion process, stable crank mechanism and improved oil supply.
The main bearing shells and caps from the latest in-line six-cylinder engines are also integrated. The four-cylinder offers an impressive 300 hp, which is available in the speed range between 5.750 and 6.500 rpm, while the maximum torque of 400 Newton meters is available from 2.000 to 4.500 rpm. Inside, the X1 M35i stands out from the standard X1 models with optional M sport seats that feature illuminated M logos and integrated headrests.
The first published images show the seats in a black and red color combination. The iDrive 9 infotainment system with a redesigned main menu on the curved display and additional QuickSelect shortcuts will be standard from the start. While the classic iDrive controller is still omitted, operation is mainly possible via voice control and the touchscreen.
unique kidney grille design
The M35i differs from the standard X1 models with a unique kidney grille design with double struts, exclusive M door mirrors and a four-pipe exhaust system. The tailpipes, each 80 millimeters thick, contrast with all other X1 models, as no other version has even a single visible tailpipe. In the wheel arches of the X1 M35i there are at least 19-inch light-alloy wheels that can optionally be upgraded to 20 inches and equipped with sports tires. The adaptive M suspension, which lowers the car by 15 millimeters, not only ensures that the wheels stand out, but also significantly improves road holding and handling.
For those who like to step on the gas, the high-performance X1 is the first M Performance car to be equipped with an M compound brake system. For the best possible traction, the X1 M35i is equipped with xDrive all-wheel drive with variable power distribution and a mechanical differential lock on the front axle. This is built into the transmission housing and offers the driver a locking effect of up to 26 percent. In addition, the new X1 M35i uses the well-known DSC variant with wheel slip limitation (ARB) close to the actuator, which ensures that control interventions are up to ten times faster than with conventional stability systems, thus enabling earlier and less noticeable interventions. The new BMW X1 M35i will celebrate its European market launch in November 2023, with prices in Germany starting at EUR 62.000.
